SoftBank’s $100 Billion U.S. Investment and 100,000-Job Pledge: What Was Announced

SoftBank’s December 2024 announcement set a four-year, $100 billion U.S. investment plan and a target of at least 100,000 jobs. The figures were pledges, not verified results.

On December 16, 2024, SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son and President-elect Donald Trump announced a plan for SoftBank to invest $100 billion in the United States and a target of creating at least 100,000 American jobs. The reported investment horizon was four years, with artificial intelligence and related infrastructure among the stated areas of focus. These were announced plans and a jobs target—not evidence that the money was spent or the jobs were created.

What SoftBank announced in December 2024

At a joint appearance at Mar-a-Lago, Trump said: “And today, I’m thrilled to announce that SoftBank will be investing $100 billion in America, creating 100,000 American jobs at a minimum.” The event transcript records Trump making that statement as president-elect; it describes the proposal, not completed investment or hiring. Read the event transcript.

Contemporaneous reporting described the plan as covering the following four years and linked the jobs target to AI and related infrastructure. See the contemporaneous report. The figures should therefore be read as the scale and ambition of the announcement, not as a tally of money deployed or workers hired.

Why SoftBank said it would invest

The stated emphasis on AI infrastructure helps explain the announcement’s focus: investment in the capacity and related infrastructure needed to support AI. The available contemporaneous coverage connects the jobs target to that area, but does not establish a detailed breakdown of the proposed $100 billion by project, company, or type of spending. The report’s account of the announcement is the basis for the four-year horizon and AI focus.

How the 2024 pledge compares with Son’s 2016 announcement

Measure 2016 announcement 2024 announcement
Announced U.S. investment $50 billion, as summarized in contemporaneous reporting. Source. $100 billion, announced December 16, 2024. Transcript; report.
Announced jobs figure 50,000 jobs, as summarized in contemporaneous reporting. Source. At least 100,000 American jobs, stated by Trump at the event. Transcript.
Timeframe Not stated in the cited summary. Source. Four years, as reported at the time. Source.
Stated focus Not stated in the cited summary. Source. AI and related infrastructure, as described in contemporaneous reporting. Source.
Documented delivery No comparable audited delivery measure is established by the cited summary. Source. The reviewed sources do not establish deployed investment or jobs attributable to the pledge. Source.

The 2024 headline figures were twice the 2016 figures Son announced alongside Trump. That is a comparison of announced amounts and targets; it does not show that either announcement was fulfilled.

Project Stargate is a separate announcement

In 2025, the White House listed Project Stargate, involving SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle, as a separate $500 billion AI-infrastructure investment announcement. See the White House announcement; see additional coverage. Its later appearance provides context for SoftBank’s U.S. AI-infrastructure activity, but it is not the same commitment as the December 2024 pledge and does not prove that pledge was fulfilled.

What is known about results

The cited sources document what Trump and Son announced, along with the reported four-year horizon and AI-infrastructure focus. They do not provide audited figures for how much of the $100 billion was deployed or how many jobs were created specifically because of the pledge. The announced target should not be treated as a realized employment statistic.
