The figure refers to roles Bungie said it would eliminate, not a later Sony-announced reduction: in June 2026, Sony reported further Bungie cuts but did not disclose a headcount.
Why did Bungie eliminate 220 roles?
In its July 31, 2024 announcement, then-CEO Pete Parsons cited rising development costs, shifts in the games industry and persistent economic conditions. He said Bungie’s expansion and incubation model had stretched its staff and support structures.

Parsons described several pressures that converged in 2023: a broad economic slowdown, a downturn in the games industry, a quality miss with Destiny 2: Lightfall, and the need to give The Final Shape and Marathon more development time. He also said Bungie had exceeded its financial safety margins and was operating in the red. Those are Bungie’s stated explanations, not independently audited findings about the studio’s finances.
Parsons called the measures “some of the most difficult changes we’ve ever had to make as a studio.”

How did the 2024 cuts differ from the Sony role integrations?
Bungie described two distinct workforce actions in 2024. The 220 roles were to be eliminated; a separate 155 roles, about 12% of Bungie’s workforce, were planned for integration into Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) over the following quarters. Bungie also said it would spin an incubation project into a new PlayStation Studios team.
| Action announced by Bungie | Roles and workforce share | What Bungie said |
|---|---|---|
| Roles eliminated, July 31, 2024 | 220 roles; roughly 17% of Bungie’s workforce | Workforce reduction affecting every level, including most executive and senior leader roles |
| Roles planned for integration into SIE, July 31, 2024 | 155 roles; roughly 12% of Bungie’s workforce | A separate integration planned over the next few quarters |
| Incubation project moved into a new PlayStation Studios team | Role total not stated in Bungie’s announcement | A separate organizational change |
The 155 roles should not be added to the 220 as if Bungie announced 375 eliminated jobs: the company described the 155 as planned integrations into SIE, not as part of the 220-role elimination. The announcement stated a plan; it does not establish whether every integration was ultimately completed.

What did Sony announce about Bungie in 2026?
On June 25, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced another reduction in Bungie’s workforce. Its statement said a significant number of employees were affected, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members, as well as SIE staff supporting Bungie. Sony gave no numerical total, so this reduction cannot be directly compared with Bungie’s 220-role figure from 2024.
Sony said the decision followed a review of Bungie’s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs and place in Sony’s portfolio. It also connected the changes to Destiny 2’s final live-service content update.

What has Bungie said about its games after the cuts?
In a September 17, 2026 update, Bungie Studio Head Poria Torkan and Marathon General Manager Josh Deane said Destiny 2 had received its final content update. They also said Bungie was beginning work to restore vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids, which would need updates to account for changes to the game since Beyond Light. The update described plans to evolve Marathon toward a deeper survival experience. These are announced plans and may change.
The update is described in Bungie’s September 17, 2026 statement.

How to read the two workforce announcements
- 2024: Bungie disclosed a specific plan to eliminate 220 roles, roughly 17% of its workforce, and separately planned to integrate 155 roles into SIE.
- 2026: Sony disclosed further cuts affecting a significant number of Bungie employees and some supporting SIE staff, but supplied no headcount.
- Reasoning: Bungie’s 2024 explanation centered on costs, industry conditions, development setbacks and its stated financial position. Sony’s 2026 explanation cited a review of Bungie’s direction, priorities, resource needs and portfolio role.
