There is no single best student checking account for everyone. The right choice depends on the student’s age, whether a parent must own the account, the fees and waiver rules, convenient cash access, and how the account handles overdrafts. For U.S. students, compare the account terms below with your real deposits and spending habits—not just the student label.
What to compare before opening an account
- Routine costs: Check monthly fees and the exact conditions for waiving them. Distinguish a minimum opening deposit from an ongoing minimum balance.
- Age and ownership: Confirm the minimum age, whether a parent or guardian must be a joint owner, and whether the student can open the account alone.
- Overdrafts: Find out whether transactions are declined when the balance is too low, whether overdraft coverage is optional, and whether overdraft or returned-payment fees apply.
- Cash access: Look for fee-free ATMs near home, campus, and summer housing. Ask whether cash deposits are convenient and whether an ATM operator may charge a separate fee.
- Everyday features: Check for a debit card, mobile alerts, transfers, bill pay, digital-wallet support, and paper checks if needed.
- What happens later: Review what changes when the student reaches an age cutoff or graduates, including new fees and ownership rules.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s student banking guidance recommends asking what fees apply, what balance is required to avoid them, how overdrafts work, and whether fee-free ATMs are close to home or school. It also suggests checking for mobile banking, bill pay, and contactless phone payments. Students who receive financial aid can generally use an account with routing and account numbers.
Student checking accounts to compare
The accounts below differ in age eligibility, ownership, and fee structure. Bank terms can change, so confirm the current account disclosures before applying.
| Account | Who may qualify and who owns it | Fees and key limits |
|---|---|---|
| Capital One 360 Checking and MONEY Teen Checking | Capital One presents 360 Checking for students age 18 and older and MONEY Teen Checking for children age 6 and older. A parent or guardian is a joint account holder on MONEY Teen Checking. | Capital One’s student page says both accounts have no monthly fees or minimum balance requirement. The page advertises access to 70,000+ ATMs; confirm whether locations near home and school are fee-free and convenient. Capital One student checking |
| Bank of America Advantage SafeBalance Banking | Teens age 16 or older may apply as sole owner; applicants under 16 may open with a parent co-owner at a financial center. | Bank of America says the accounts described on its student pages have no monthly maintenance fee until age 25. SafeBalance does not permit paper checks and uses a fixed Decline All overdraft setting; the bank says it charges no Overdraft Item Fees. Bank of America student banking |
| Bank of America SafeBalance for Family Banking | Parent-owned account for a younger child. Children age 6 or older can have a login to view balances, monitor transactions, and set alerts, but cannot deposit or transfer money through the account. | No paper checks; fixed Decline All overdraft setting and no Overdraft Item Fees, according to Bank of America. The account does not support direct deposit or Zelle. Verify the current fee schedule and eligibility. Bank of America student banking |
| Chase Secure Banking | Chase describes this option for college students age 17–24. The page lists no minimum opening deposit. | The listed monthly service fee is $4.95, or $0 if the owner is age 17–24 or the account receives $250 or more in qualifying electronic deposits during each statement period. Cash, checks, Zelle, wire transfers, and interest do not count as qualifying electronic deposits. Chase student banking offer page |
| Chase High School Checking | For teens age 13–17, with a parent or guardian as co-owner; the adult must have a Chase checking account. | Chase describes no monthly service fee when its co-owner/linking conditions are met. The page lists no minimum opening deposit. Chase student banking offer page |
How the accounts differ in practice
Capital One: teen access with a joint adult owner
MONEY Teen Checking gives the teen a debit card and sign-in. The adult joint account holder can monitor activity, send allowance or transfers, and lock or unlock the card. Capital One says the account can remain open when the teen turns 18; the account holder can also open 360 Checking and transfer the balance. The bank says graduation does not affect the status of its 360 or MONEY Teen accounts, though age and ownership rules still apply. Its page currently advertises a $250 360 Checking bonus; that is a temporary offer, not a standing account feature, and eligibility is governed by the linked terms. Verify the offer directly before relying on it.

Bank of America: separate teen-owned and parent-owned options
SafeBalance is the student- or young-adult-owned option, while SafeBalance for Family Banking is owned by a parent and gives a younger child limited access and parental controls. SafeBalance supports direct deposit and Zelle for users age 13 or older; Family Banking supports neither. The no-check and Decline All restrictions can reduce overdraft exposure, but a transaction may be declined, and a payee could still charge its own fee. Confirm which account and fee waiver apply to the intended owner before opening one.
Chase: check the qualifying deposit definition
Chase’s college-age option on the cited page is Secure Banking, not an account casually labeled “College Checking.” Its $250 electronic-deposit threshold, when used to waive the monthly fee for someone outside the age-based waiver, excludes several common transfers: cash, checks, Zelle, wire transfers, and interest. The page showed a new-customer bonus offer ending January 27, 2027 when accessed October 4, 2026; check the live page and full conditions because offers can change.

Understand overdraft trade-offs
Overdraft protection is not automatically a benefit. The CFPB explains that banks and credit unions may charge for allowing debit-card purchases or ATM withdrawals that exceed the available balance. For covered debit-card and ATM overdrafts, a bank generally cannot charge an overdraft fee unless the customer has agreed to that service. Without opting in, a transaction greater than the balance could be denied, as the CFPB guidance notes.
Declining an overdraft can avoid the bank’s overdraft fee but may cause a purchase or payment to fail. Check separately for returned-payment rules and possible fees charged by a merchant or biller. Bank of America’s SafeBalance accounts, for example, are set to Decline All and do not permit paper checks.

Choose by age, access, and everyday use
If the student is under 18
Start by checking ownership requirements. Capital One MONEY Teen Checking requires a parent or guardian as a joint holder. Chase High School Checking requires a co-owner who already has a Chase checking account. Bank of America offers a parent-owned Family Banking account for younger children, while teens age 16 and older may apply to own SafeBalance alone. These arrangements differ in what the adult can control and what the teen can do independently.
If the student is 18 or older
Compare accounts open to an adult student with ordinary checking alternatives as well as branded student products. A student account is not necessarily the cheapest: a fee waiver that depends on qualifying direct deposits may not help someone whose funds arrive another way, while an age-based waiver may be easier to meet. Include nearby ATMs and cash-deposit options in the comparison.

If the student needs cash or checks
Do not treat a large ATM network number as proof that cash will be convenient. Check locations near campus, home, and summer housing, and ask whether the ATM owner imposes a separate surcharge. If the student needs paper checks, rule out accounts that do not support them, including the Bank of America SafeBalance accounts described above.
