The companies pitched the combination as a way to connect technical security findings with access and compliance context—not as proof that every proposed product integration was completed.
What the acquisition brought together
eEye was presented as a vulnerability- and threat-management company. Its tools identified weaknesses in systems so organizations could assess and address exposure. BeyondTrust’s existing focus included privilege identity management: controlling and understanding the access rights users and accounts held.
The distinction is useful, but not absolute. Vulnerability discovery can reveal risk before or during an attack; privilege management addresses what users and systems can do once access exists. These capabilities could inform one another without dividing all threats neatly into “external” and “internal” categories.
Why BeyondTrust said it wanted eEye
The companies’ strategic thesis was to combine vulnerability information with privilege and compliance data. The proposed benefit was better prioritization: security teams could consider both a technical weakness and the access or business context around it when deciding what to remediate first. BeyondTrust called the concept “Context Aware Security Intelligence.” BeyondTrust’s announcement described this as the rationale for the deal, not a measured post-acquisition result.

Jim Zierick, then BeyondTrust executive vice president of product operations, summarized the complementary roles in a contemporary report: “BeyondTrust, from an access management point-of view, helps customers deal with risks from within their organizations while eEye focuses on vulnerability management, which is about the external threat” (CRN, May 10, 2012). That phrasing captures the companies’ pitch, rather than a complete taxonomy of where threats originate.
Products and integration plans announced in 2012
Contemporary coverage named eEye’s Retina CS Vulnerability Management and Analytics and BeyondTrust’s PowerBroker family as potential integration points. CRN reported that the products were expected to remain available separately or in combination. This was a reported plan at the time; it does not establish which integrations were ultimately completed or the current availability of those legacy products. CRN’s acquisition report covered the proposed product relationship.

What happened later to vulnerability management
In a 2020 portfolio notice, BeyondTrust said it was leaving the vulnerability-management market and ending sale and end-of-life support for Enterprise Vulnerability Management, formerly Retina CS and Retina Network Security Scanner. It named Tenable as its exclusive strategic partner for customers using BeyondTrust’s Vulnerability Management Suite. The notice describes that later portfolio decision; it does not establish the current status of every legacy installation or any present-day commercial arrangement.
