Rivian’s board appointment of Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez signals interest in AI expertise. Its later announcements span autonomy, in-car assistance and software, but do not establish a Cohere partnership or proven business results.

Rivian elected Cohere co-founder and CEO Aidan Gomez to its board on April 21, 2025, as a Class II director. The appointment is a clear signal that the EV maker values AI expertise at board level, but it does not show that Rivian hired Cohere or uses Cohere technology in its vehicles. Since then, Rivian has described AI work spanning driving assistance, in-car software, shared data systems and service diagnostics.

Who is Aidan Gomez?

Gomez co-founded Cohere, an AI company, and has served as its CEO and a board member since September 2019, according to Rivian’s April 21, 2025 SEC filing. The filing also identifies him as a former Google Brain researcher.

What happened with Rivian’s board appointment?

Rivian’s board expanded its size and elected Gomez as a Class II director effective immediately on April 21, 2025. His initial term was set to expire at the 2026 annual meeting. At the June 22, 2026 annual meeting, shareholders elected him to a term through the 2029 annual meeting. Rivian’s June 26, 2026 filing lists him as a director since April 2025 and says the company considers his leadership experience and AI expertise relevant qualifications.

Why does the appointment point to AI?

A board appointment does not establish what products a company will build, but Rivian’s stated rationale makes AI expertise part of the picture: the company specifically cited Gomez’s AI background in its 2026 proxy materials. The appointment is therefore evidence of board-level interest in AI, not proof that a particular AI initiative will succeed or generate financial returns.

Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe described the company’s strategic view at its December 11, 2025 Autonomy & AI Day: “Rivian’s vertical integration strategy uniquely positions the company to lead the charge into an AI-defined future.” That is Scaringe’s characterization of Rivian’s position, rather than an independently verified assessment.

Where Rivian says it is using AI

Rivian’s later announcements describe several distinct areas of AI work. They should not be treated as one feature or as evidence that every capability is available to every owner.

Driving assistance and autonomy

At Autonomy & AI Day, Rivian outlined its approach to vehicle compute, autonomy and a shared data foundation. It said Universal Hands-Free covered 3.5 million miles of roads across the United States and Canada; that is a company-reported coverage figure, not a safety or performance result. The event page listed Autonomy+ at $2,500 one time or $49.99 per month at the time, December 11, 2025. Those historical prices may have changed and should not be assumed to be current. Rivian’s Autonomy & AI Day announcement describes the company’s plans and claims.

In-car assistant and shared software foundation

On May 12, 2026, Rivian announced Rivian Assistant and Rivian Unified Intelligence. The company said the assistant was rolling out to compatible Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles for owners with Connect+ or an active trial. Unified Intelligence is Rivian’s name for a shared AI foundation intended to support vehicle, service and business experiences. Availability depends on vehicle eligibility and rollout; the announcement does not establish that all Rivian vehicles have the same capabilities. R2 in-cabin computing and ongoing software rollout

In June 2026, Rivian said R2 would have 200 sparse TOPS of edge AI compute for its in-cabin experience. TOPS describes processing capacity, not the quality or usefulness of an AI feature. Rivian later announced RivianOS 2’s rollout to eligible R1 and R2 vehicles; software availability remains subject to vehicle eligibility and rollout. These company materials show continued product development, but do not independently establish real-world outcomes. See Rivian’s R2 technology overview and Rivian’s RivianOS 2 announcement.

Service diagnostics

Rivian has also described service diagnostics as one intended area for its shared AI and data foundations. That places AI beyond the driver-facing interface, but the company materials do not quantify the effect on repair time, service costs or reliability.

What the appointment does—and does not—tell investors

For investors, Gomez’s appointment is a governance signal: Rivian chose to add a director whose experience includes leading an AI company. The later product announcements give context for why that expertise may be relevant, from autonomy to software and service operations. Neither the appointment nor the company’s feature descriptions demonstrate that AI has improved Rivian’s margins, vehicle safety, sales or stock performance. The materials also do not establish a Cohere-Rivian contract or that Cohere technology is deployed in Rivian vehicles.
