To promote a blog on social media, choose one or two platforms your readers actually use, tailor each article into useful native content, and track whether it earns relevant engagement and visits. Consistency helps you learn what works; no posting schedule or format guarantees reach, because platform feeds and recommendations change.
How do I promote my blog on social media?
Think of social media as a distribution system, not a place to paste the same link repeatedly. Each post should give a reader a reason to stop, understand what the article offers, and choose whether to visit it.
- Choose a small, audience-fit channel mix. Start with one or two platforms your intended readers use and that suit your content. Australian government guidance recommends managing one or two channels well rather than spreading effort across many. [Australian Government guidance]
- Set a goal for each channel. Decide whether you want awareness, discussion, referral clicks, or a specific conversion. A channel’s purpose should shape the post and the metric you monitor.
- Repurpose the article into native content. Create an original Pin, visual post, video excerpt, or discussion prompt instead of publishing an identical link post everywhere. Pinterest recommends original Pins and quality visuals; LinkedIn encourages visual and video content and conversation. [Pinterest Pin guidance] [LinkedIn Pages Best Practices]
- Make the click worthwhile and clear. Use a useful title and description, relevant keywords in natural language, and a direct link to the article. Tell readers what they will get rather than relying on a vague teaser.
- Pick a sustainable publishing rhythm. Plan posts in advance and publish consistently enough to compare results. Australian government guidance suggests three to five posts a week as a general starting point for most platforms; Pinterest advises aiming to publish original content weekly and allows scheduling up to two weeks ahead. These are platform-specific guidelines, not guarantees or rules for every account. [Australian Government guidance] [Pinterest scheduling guidance]
- Use current platform guidance and features. Instagram’s professional dashboard includes a Best Practices section covering creation, engagement, reach, monetization, and guidelines, with personalized tips. Check it when deciding what to improve rather than treating old platform advice as permanent. [Instagram Best Practices announcement]
- Participate in relevant conversations. Answer questions and contribute expertise in appropriate discussions and groups; do not drop links where they are unwanted. GOV.UK’s Social Media Playbook recommends LinkedIn discussions and relevant groups, while LinkedIn advises Pages to interact and respond. [GOV.UK Social Media Playbook] [LinkedIn Pages Best Practices]
- Invite appropriate amplification. LinkedIn Pages can notify employees about important posts up to once a week. Use this selectively for genuinely relevant updates; it is a LinkedIn-specific option, not a general requirement. [LinkedIn Pages Best Practices]
- Measure, learn, and adjust. Review platform analytics for engagement, saves, and clicks, then compare referral visits on your site. Claiming your website on Pinterest unlocks analytics for Pins from that site. GOV.UK’s playbook suggests allowing three months of data when posting daily, or six months or more when posting weekly, to build a useful benchmark. [Pinterest website-claim guidance] [GOV.UK Social Media Playbook]
- Avoid spam and disclose promotion. Do not use duplicate Pins, misleading or unrelated captions, excessive hashtags, or fake engagement. Meta says Facebook spam practices can reduce distribution and monetization; Pinterest warns duplicate Pins may be treated as spam. If a post promotes a commercial relationship, clearly label it in line with applicable local rules. UK Competition and Markets Authority guidance says promotional content resulting from marketing activity should be clearly labelled as ads, including when commissions or gifts are involved. Which social media platform is best for driving traffic to a blog?
There is no universally best platform. Choose based on where your likely readers spend time, what format you can make well, what action you want, and whether you can measure that action. The Australian government’s broad guide describes these common fits:
| Platform | Broad content fit | Useful role for a blog |
|---|---|---|
| Visual discovery | Can direct people to a website, including a blog; use original Pins with a clear title, description, and destination link. | |
| Professional expertise and discussion | Share useful professional insights and take part in relevant conversations. | |
| YouTube | Longer informative or entertaining video | Explain a topic in video and point interested viewers to related written material. |
| Visual awareness | Present an article’s ideas in visual formats and use current creator guidance to improve posts. |
These are broad descriptions, not promises about who will see a post or how much traffic it will bring. [Australian Government guidance]

How can I get more people to click my blog posts?
Make the post useful even before the click: offer a specific insight, question, or visual drawn from the article, then explain what the full article adds. Match the format to the platform, write a descriptive title and caption, and link directly to the relevant page. Track clicks alongside site visits so that high engagement without referral traffic does not look like success if your actual goal is readership.
Use platform claims cautiously. LinkedIn’s Pages Best Practices page says video gets five times more engagement and live video 24 times more; these are LinkedIn-published comparative claims, not a forecast for every Page or a comparison across platforms. [LinkedIn Pages Best Practices]

How often should I post links to my blog?
There is no evidence-backed universal frequency for posting blog links. Treat the suggested three to five posts a week on most platforms and Pinterest’s advice to publish original content weekly as starting guidance, not a quota. Vary your useful native posts rather than making every update a link solicitation, and use a cadence you can maintain long enough to assess.
For a more meaningful baseline, GOV.UK’s Social Media Playbook suggests three months of data for daily posting or six months or more for weekly posting. Those periods are a benchmark-building guide, not a promise that performance will stabilize on a particular date. [GOV.UK Social Media Playbook]

How do I avoid damaging trust while promoting a blog?
- Do not manufacture engagement, flood feeds with duplicates, or use captions and hashtags unrelated to the article. Meta reports taking down more than 100 million fake Facebook Pages involved in scripted follows abuse in 2024; the scale of enforcement underscores why artificial engagement is not a sound distribution strategy. [Meta spam policy]
- Respect each platform’s rules and update your approach when its current guidance changes.
- Clearly disclose paid, gifted, commission-based, or otherwise incentivized promotion according to the rules where you and your audience are located. The UK CMA’s guidance is UK-specific; other jurisdictions may set different requirements. [UK CMA endorsement guidance]
