HPE is not yet shown to have collected $1 billion—or any specific amount—from Michael Lynch’s estate. The latest reported figure in the supplied case record is £920 million, including compensation, costs and interest, but the estate won permission in September 2026 to appeal four grounds. The underlying July 2025 damages ruling was £740 million. These figures are not the same as HPE’s original claim, and HPE says any recovery is shared equally with HP Inc.
What the headline’s figures mean
The headline’s “$4.5 billion” refers to the scale of the claim, not an award or cash received. The figures reported at different stages measure different things:

The dollar and pound figures should not be compared as though they were a single fixed conversion: they were reported at different times and describe different procedural measures. Nor does a court assessment establish that the money has been paid or collected.
Why HPE claimed damages in the Autonomy case
HP acquired software company Autonomy in 2011. The dispute concerns claims that Autonomy’s financial presentation before the acquisition was improper. Four HPE subsidiaries began UK civil proceedings against former Autonomy executives Michael Lynch and Sushovan Hussain in 2015, according to HPE’s filing. HPE filing

In May 2022, the High Court found the claimants had succeeded on substantially all claims against Lynch and Hussain and dismissed Lynch’s counterclaim. That was a liability decision: it did not itself set the amount of damages. The court held a two-week damages trial in February 2024. HPE filing

What remains uncertain: appeal and actual recovery
The Independent reported on September 1, 2026, that the estate had permission to appeal on four grounds, including whether Lynch knew of improper accounting. Permission to appeal is not a decision overturning the ruling; the cited report does not say the appeal has been heard or decided. The available reports also do not establish how much, if any, has been collected. The £920 million is a reported amount including costs and interest, not proof of payment. The record does not establish a final post-appeal amount or the collectible value of the estate’s assets.
Who would receive any recovery?
HPE’s filing says HP Inc. and HPE share equally in any recovery under their separation agreement. The court’s award is payable to the claimants or relevant entities; it should not be described as money HPE alone will keep. In the same filing, HPE said claimants were seeking $1.786 billion from Lynch’s estate at that point. That was the claimants’ position in the filing, not the court’s damages award. HPE filing

Keep the UK civil case separate from the US criminal case
The UK proceedings were civil claims brought by HPE subsidiaries against Lynch and Hussain. A US criminal prosecution involved different parties, claims, procedures and legal standards. A US criminal verdict does not by itself decide liability in the UK civil case. HPE filing Associated Press
