For tax year 2025, “other income” is a reporting category for certain income that does not have a more specific place on Form 1040—not a single type of payment and not a catch-all for everything outside a paycheck. Many listed items go on Schedule 1, Part I, but the right place depends on what generated the payment and whether it came from a business or another activity.

Where other income goes on a 2025 tax return

The IRS uses Schedule 1 to report income or adjustments that cannot be entered directly on Form 1040, Form 1040-SR, or Form 1040-NR. For tax year 2025, many items commonly described as other income are listed in Part I of Schedule 1.

  1. Report a qualifying item on its applicable Schedule 1, Part I line. If no specific line fits, line 8z is labeled “Other income. List type and amount.”
  2. Schedule 1 line 9 totals lines 8a through 8z. It is the total of that set of additional-income entries, not the full additional-income amount transferred to Form 1040.
  3. Schedule 1 line 10 combines lines 1 through 7 with line 9. That total carries to Form 1040 line 8.

Thus, Schedule 1 line 8z “Other income” and Form 1040 line 8 are not interchangeable: Form 1040 line 8 receives the broader Schedule 1 line 10 total. The IRS’s 2025 Form 1040 instructions explain the schedule’s purpose, and the 2025 Schedule 1 provides the line-by-line categories.

What kinds of income appear on Schedule 1, Part I?

The 2025 Schedule 1 has specific entries for a range of additional-income items. The categories include:

  • Net operating loss and gambling winnings.
  • Cancellation of debt and the foreign earned income exclusion.
  • Income from Forms 8853 and 8889, and Alaska Permanent Fund dividends.
  • Jury duty pay; prizes and awards; and income from an activity not engaged in for profit.
  • Stock options and certain rentals of personal property when the rental activity is conducted for profit but is not a business.
  • Certain Olympic and Paralympic medals and U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee prize money.
  • Specified inclusions under sections 951(a) and 951A(a), and the section 461(l) excess business loss adjustment.
  • Taxable distributions from an ABLE account, and scholarship or fellowship grants not reported on Form W-2.
  • The nontaxable portion of certain Medicaid waiver payments included on line 1a or 1d; specified nonqualified deferred-compensation and nongovernmental section 457 payments; and wages earned while incarcerated.
  • Digital assets received as ordinary income when not reported elsewhere, plus line 8z for other income that must be identified by type and amount.

These are reporting categories, not a rule that every receipt in a broad category is taxable in the same way. Some have their own exclusions, calculations, or reporting instructions. Follow the instructions for the specific line and payment.

When a payment belongs somewhere other than “other income”

Do not classify a payment solely by asking whether it came from an employer. Form 1040 and its schedules have separate places for different kinds of income, and a payment’s source and connection to work or a business matter.

Self-employment and nonemployee compensation

When income reported on Form 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC, or 1099-K is self-employment income, the 2025 instructions generally direct taxpayers to report it on Schedule C rather than Schedule 1 lines 8a–8z. The label on an information return alone does not determine the tax treatment. Hobby income or income from sporadic activity may be treated differently, depending on the facts.

Hobby and other occasional income

The IRS lists hobby or activity-not-for-profit income, gambling winnings, kickbacks or side commissions, and manufacturer incentive payments among examples discussed in Publication 525 (2025). Hobby income is reported on Schedule 1 line 8j. For 2025, related expense deductions are limited to the income reported and are deductible only if the taxpayer itemizes on Schedule A.

Payments reported on Form 1099-K

A Form 1099-K does not by itself establish that the reported amount is taxable income. For 2025, Schedule 1 provides an entry for amounts reported in error or for personal items sold at a loss; any remaining amount must be reported elsewhere according to the underlying transaction. Identify what the payment was for before choosing a line.

How to work out the correct reporting line

Use the transaction, not just the name of the form or the fact that money changed hands, to classify a payment. Check these points in order:

  1. Identify what generated it. Determine whether it came from a job, a trade or business, a hobby, a prize, a debt cancellation, an investment, or another event.
  2. Check for a dedicated reporting line. Form 1040 or Schedule 1 may name the category directly. Use line 8z only when a more specific line does not apply.
  3. Review the information return and its instructions. A W-2, 1099, Form 8889, or Form 8853 can provide relevant information, but the form alone may not settle classification.
  4. Follow any schedule referral. Business income may belong on Schedule C; other items can have special reporting, exclusions, or calculations.
  5. Use the instructions for the correct tax year. Forms and line labels can change. The IRS says e-file software generally determines which numbered schedules are needed when preparing a return; see About Form 1040.

A dated example: Alaska Permanent Fund dividends

Schedule 1 lists Alaska Permanent Fund dividends as a category. Publication 525 (2025) says the full 2024 dividend of $1,702 was federally taxable and should not be reduced by the energy-relief portion. That figure applies to the 2024 payment described in the publication; it is not a general dividend amount or a rule for other years.

What this overview cannot determine

Without knowing the payment’s source, the activity that produced it, and any related forms or expenses, it is not possible to determine its proper line or tax treatment. Use the current-year IRS instructions for the return being filed; this overview explains the tax-year 2025 reporting framework, not the treatment of an unidentified payment.
