Buy from a seller whose identity and contact details you can verify, check the toy’s material and care instructions, and read the seller’s current shipping, privacy, payment, and return policies before checkout. Plain packaging is common, but it is not guaranteed for every order; confirm what the specific seller says about packaging and delivery.
How to compare toys and sellers
Compare the product and the purchase terms together. A low listed price may not be the lowest total cost, and a discreet-looking product page does not tell you what will appear on a parcel, payment record, or delivery notification.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Material and intended use | Look for a specific material disclosure and intended-use information, rather than a vague claim such as “body-safe.” Check the product’s dimensions, design, warnings, and cleaning directions. |
| Lubricant and condom compatibility | Check the manufacturer’s instructions. Planned Parenthood says water-based lubricant is a safe bet with any toy and condom; silicone lubricant may damage silicone toys unless a condom is used. Planned Parenthood’s sex-toy guidance |
| Seller and product information | Identify the company selling and shipping the item, especially on a marketplace. Check contact details, product specifics, and reviews from more than one source. |
| Shipping and privacy | Read the seller’s current packaging and shipping policy, plus its privacy policy and terms. Check what might appear in the parcel, sender name, email notifications, tracking, or account history. |
| Total cost and payment | Compare the item price plus shipping, handling, tax, and other fees. Prefer a recognized payment method with recourse; be wary if a seller insists on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency. |
| Returns | Check the return window, return-shipping cost, restocking fees, and any different terms for sale items before ordering. |
Choose a material you can identify and care for
For a toy that contacts the body, look for a clearly identified material and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and use instructions. Planned Parenthood lists 100% silicone—not silicone blends—hard plastic, stainless steel, aluminum, and break-resistant glass as examples of nonporous materials.
Labels such as silicone blends, jelly rubber, PVC, vinyl, TPR, TPE, elastomer, or other rubbery plastics may indicate porous materials that can absorb germs and be harder to clean, according to Planned Parenthood. A condom on a toy can help keep it clean, but it does not replace checking whether the toy is suitable for its intended use or following its care instructions.

Material alone does not establish that a toy is suitable for every person or use. Inspect the manufacturer’s material disclosure, intended use, size and design, warnings, and cleaning directions. ISO 3533:2021 sets safety and user-information requirements for materials and design of manufactured products intended for sexual use that contact the genitals and/or anus; it is not primarily intended for products classified as medical devices, cosmetics, or assistive products such as lubricants and massage oil. ISO lists the standard as published and under systematic review as of July 15, 2026. That does not establish that any specific product complies. ISO 3533:2021
Check the seller before sharing payment details
- Identify who is behind the site. Look for a company name and usable contact details. Search the business and product names with terms such as “complaint” or “scam,” and compare reviews from multiple sources. Ratings and reviews can be misleading.
- Read the full listing. Confirm the exact material, dimensions, intended use, care, and compatibility information. On a marketplace, check which company actually sells and ships the item.
- Review the full cost and delivery commitment. Include shipping, handling, tax, and other fees. Check the stated delivery terms before placing the order.
- Read the return terms. Note the deadline, shipping costs, restocking fees, and any exceptions for sale items. Save the order confirmation and the policies that applied when you bought.
- Use a payment method with recourse. The FTC says credit cards offer dispute protections in relevant cases. Avoid a seller that insists on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency.
An “https” address is useful but limited: it indicates that the connection is encrypted, not that the seller is legitimate. The Federal Trade Commission put it plainly in its May 2023 online shopping guidance: “The ‘s’ after http means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site.”

Verify what discreet shipping means for this order
Planned Parenthood says online sex-toy sellers usually mail products in plain packaging. “Usually” is not a promise about a particular merchant or shipment, so check the seller’s current policy before paying. Look for what it says about the outer parcel and sender name, and whether order details could appear in email notifications, tracking, or an account.
Consider who can access the mailbox, delivery location, device, email, and shopping account. A shared account or email address may expose order records. A seller’s privacy policy, user agreement, and terms can explain what personal and purchase information it collects, uses, shares, and protects; the FTC notes that shopping sites may collect information about what, when, where, and how someone buys.

Do not assume private browsing erases a retailer’s records, or that a discreet parcel means a payment statement will be discreet. Check the seller’s stated practices for each channel that matters to you. Packaging, payment descriptors, privacy rules, and shipping restrictions can vary by seller and location.
Use and clean the toy according to its design
- Choose a purpose-made toy rather than an improvised object, particularly for insertion.
- Wash the toy with mild soap and water after use and before it touches another person’s genitals, following any additional manufacturer directions.
- If sharing a toy, use a condom to help reduce transfer of body fluids and change it before the toy contacts another partner’s genitals.
- For anal use, use plenty of lubricant and choose a toy with a wide base or another stop feature so it cannot travel beyond reach.
- Do not move a toy from anus to vagina without washing it or changing the condom.
These care and use recommendations are from Planned Parenthood. Follow the product’s own instructions as well, since designs and materials differ.
