In a December 2024 interview with TIME, then-president-elect Donald Trump said he still expected grocery prices to fall, but acknowledged that lowering prices after they rise is difficult. He also said grocery prices alone would not determine whether his presidency was a failure—a more qualified answer than his campaign’s confident promises to cut prices quickly.
What Trump said about grocery prices in the TIME interview
The interviewer asked, “If the prices of groceries don’t come down, will your presidency be a failure?” Trump replied that he did not think so, adding: “It’s hard to bring things down once they’re up.” He said he would like to lower prices and predicted that energy costs and a better supply chain would help. He also described the supply chain as still broken. Mediaite reproduced the exchange from the TIME interview on December 12, 2024.
How the answer differed from his campaign promises
The “walk back” is a shift in certainty, not an explicit withdrawal of every promise. Mediaite contrasted the interview with earlier campaign remarks: at an August rally, Trump said, “Prices will come down,” and that they would “come down fast”; at a September rally, he said, “We’re going to get the prices down”; and at an October Georgia rally, he promised to “slash your prices.” Mediaite also cited repeated promises to end inflation and cut prices during campaign appearances on November 4, 2024. These examples illustrate the contrast; they are not a complete inventory of his campaign statements. Mediaite’s account reports both the earlier remarks and the interview response.
In the interview, Trump continued to say prices would fall, but framed that outcome as difficult and dependent on lower energy costs and supply-chain improvements. He also rejected the idea that grocery prices failing to fall would, by itself, establish that his presidency had failed.

What grocery prices looked like in contemporaneous coverage
In a December 12, 2024 segment, CNN reporter Matt Egan said supermarket prices were up 27 percent since February 2020. He cited butter up 4 percent and pork chops up 5 percent over the prior 12 months, and eggs nearly 40 percent more expensive over that period; the segment identified bird flu as a major factor for eggs. These are figures and an explanation reported in CNN’s transcript, not independently verified agency statistics. Read CNN’s December 12 transcript.
The same CNN segment discussed possible price pressures from proposed tariffs on imported foods and possible reductions in farm labor if mass deportations occurred. Those were prospective risks, not measured effects of policies already implemented. The interview and contemporaneous coverage do not establish what happened to grocery prices or policy outcomes afterward.

What the interview does—and does not—establish
- Trump acknowledged that bringing prices down after they rise is hard.
- He nevertheless predicted lower grocery prices, pointing to energy costs and supply-chain improvement as possible contributors.
- He said grocery prices not falling would not, on its own, mean his presidency had failed.
- The contrast with his campaign statements is about tone and certainty; the interview did not amount to a blanket retraction.
