Imports rose 16.3% year over year while total exports fell 3.4%. The committee’s rounded figures show $34.5 billion in imports and $22.9 billion in exports; because those totals are rounded to one decimal place, their $11.6 billion difference does not contradict the reported $11.7 billion deficit.
What were Uzbekistan’s trade figures for January–August 2026?
In a release dated 2 October 2026, the National Statistics Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan reported $57.4 billion in foreign-trade turnover, up $4 billion, or 7.6%, from January–August 2025. Exports totaled $22.9 billion, down 3.4% year over year, while imports totaled $34.5 billion, up 16.3%. National Statistics Committee release
| Measure | January–August 2026 | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign-trade turnover | $57.4 billion | Up $4 billion, or 7.6% |
| Total exports | $22.9 billion | Down 3.4% |
| Total imports | $34.5 billion | Up 16.3% |
| Reported trade deficit | About $11.7 billion | Headline reports a 93% increase |
The headline’s 93% year-over-year increase is the reported change in the deficit. It should not be treated as independently confirmed by subtracting the published rounded export and import totals.
Why do the rounded totals imply an $11.6bn deficit?
Subtracting the displayed figures—$34.5 billion in imports minus $22.9 billion in exports—gives $11.6 billion. The committee’s reported deficit is $11.7 billion. Both totals are shown to one decimal place, so the underlying, more precise values can produce a difference that rounds to $11.7 billion even when the displayed totals subtract to $11.6 billion. The rounded arithmetic is not evidence of a contradiction.

Why did the trade deficit widen?
The January–August release shows the immediate direction of the change: imports increased 16.3% while total exports declined 3.4%. It does not identify a specific cause for the deficit widening, so attributing the change to a particular import category, investment, consumer demand or export factor would go beyond what this release establishes.
How do gold-excluded goods exports compare with total exports?
The committee reported $11.5 billion in goods exports excluding gold, up 28.7% year over year. This is a narrower measure than the $22.9 billion total export figure; the two figures have different coverage and should not be compared as if they were the same export total. Their different directions—growth in gold-excluded goods exports alongside a decline in total exports—do not by themselves explain the overall fall. National Statistics Committee release

For separate context, the Central Bank’s first-half 2026 balance-of-payments review said lower gold exports mainly drove the export decline in that period, while non-gold exports and services exports rose. It also associated high imports with machinery and equipment, vehicles, chemical and mineral products, and food products amid investment activity and consumer demand. Those comments concern the first half and a balance-of-payments series, not a direct explanation of the committee’s January–August foreign-trade result. Which countries accounted for the largest shares of trade?
The committee said Uzbekistan maintained trade relations with more than 200 countries. Its largest listed partners by share of total foreign-trade turnover were:

These percentages describe each partner’s share of combined foreign-trade turnover, not its share of Uzbekistan’s exports or imports separately. The Statistics Committee’s foreign-economic-activity portal lists distinct goods, services, country and product-category series; it also distinguishes goods exports at FOB prices from goods imports at CIF prices. Comparisons across series should account for those definitions. Statistics Committee foreign-economic-activity portal

The Central Bank’s separate H1 2026 balance-of-payments review reported exports of $15.4 billion, imports of $28.8 billion and a $13.4 billion trade-balance deficit. That figure covers January–June and uses balance-of-payments reporting, while the Statistics Committee’s $11.7 billion figure covers January–August foreign trade. The periods and statistical definitions differ, so the two deficits are not like-for-like measures and should not be read as evidence that the deficit narrowed between June and August.
