As of October 4, 2026, Amtrak’s new Airo trains are already carrying passengers on Cascades, while the next announced Airo launch—Northeast Regional—is planned for late 2027. NextGen Acela has been operating on the Northeast Corridor since August 2025. A separate replacement for Amtrak’s long-distance passenger cars is still in procurement planning, with no delivery date announced.
Which new Amtrak trains are in service or on the way?
| Fleet | Status as of October 4, 2026 | Routes | Timing and scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airo | Operating | Amtrak Cascades: Vancouver, B.C., Seattle, Portland and Eugene | Two trainsets began service September 30, 2026, initially covering four daily trips. Eight sets were ordered for Cascades; further sets are expected through early 2027. Amtrak plans 83 Airo trainsets nationwide over the coming years. |
| Airo for Northeast Regional | First set completed production and began testing | Northeast Corridor regional service | Revenue service is planned for late 2027; this is a forward plan, not a guaranteed launch date. |
| NextGen Acela | Operating; rollout continues | Northeast Corridor, including Boston–New York–Washington, D.C. | Amtrak reported 16 trains in service at the first-year mark in August 2026. Its earlier plan called for 28 trainsets to enter service through 2027. |
| Long-distance passenger-car replacement | Procurement planned | Long-distance routes | Amtrak announced a new supplier bid process in February 2026; the cited announcement did not set a delivery schedule. |
Where Airo is already running
Amtrak says two Airo trainsets entered revenue service on Cascades on September 30, 2026. At launch, they were assigned to four daily trips serving Vancouver, B.C., Seattle, Portland and Eugene. Amtrak expects additional Cascades sets to enter service through early 2027, ultimately replacing the existing Cascades fleet. The launch count and service details are Amtrak-reported.
When will Airo reach other routes?
Amtrak’s next stated Airo deployment is Northeast Regional, where the first trainset has completed production and begun testing. Amtrak plans a late-2027 revenue-service launch. Because this is a planned date, it should not be read as a confirmed day of service.
Amtrak lists 83 Airo trainsets for deployment across the country over the coming years. Its route list includes Northeast Regional, Empire Service, Virginia Services, Keystone Service, Downeaster, Cascades, Maple Leaf, New Haven/Springfield service, Palmetto, Carolinian, Pennsylvanian, Vermonter, Ethan Allen Express and Adirondack. The national fleet figure is a long-term plan; Amtrak has not given a firm launch date for every listed route.

NextGen Acela is already serving the Northeast Corridor
NextGen Acela entered service on August 28, 2025. In its August 28, 2026 first-year account, Amtrak said 16 trains were in service and reported nearly 1.5 million customer trips on NextGen Acela during the first year. Those are company-reported figures. An earlier July 2026 update cited 13 trains and 32 weekday trips, reflecting an expanding rollout; the August anniversary figure is the later snapshot.
Amtrak’s 2025 announcement said 28 NextGen Acela trainsets were planned to enter service through 2027. The trains serve the Northeast Corridor, but not every departure necessarily uses the new equipment. Amtrak says customers can look for an icon below the train number when booking and warns that equipment may be substituted without prior notice. Check the itinerary near booking and again before travel.

What is known about the long-distance fleet replacement?
In February 2026, Amtrak said it would seek bids for a new long-distance passenger-car fleet after cancelling its earlier bi-level procurement. It also said it would assess the existing fleet and any life-extension work needed while the new builder and delivery schedule were determined. The cited announcement names no selected builder and gives no delivery date, so a launch year cannot yet be stated.
