In the U.S., RepairPal estimates a transmission-fluid change at $294–$356, based on an estimate updated September 3, 2026. That is a planning benchmark, not a guaranteed local quote: it excludes taxes and fees, and your vehicle and the procedure the shop performs can change the total.
What does a transmission-fluid change cost?
RepairPal’s U.S. estimate is $294–$356, with labor estimated at $131–$192 and parts at about $163. RepairPal says taxes and fees are excluded, so the amount you pay may be higher. See RepairPal’s estimate and its update date.
A separate MotorLogic guide gives a broader $120–$450 range for transmission-fluid service and says the price varies with vehicle, location, labor rate, and parts. The two figures have different scopes and methodologies; neither is a primary market survey, so they should not be averaged or treated as interchangeable quotes. Read MotorLogic’s guide.

What work is included
“Transmission-fluid change” does not necessarily describe the same work at every shop. A drain and refill replaces fluid that drains from the transmission; the service may also include filter work. A flush is a different procedure and can require up to 16 quarts of fluid, according to RepairPal, which can raise parts and labor costs. Ask the shop to name the procedure rather than comparing quotes by the service label alone. RepairPal describes the service and cost factors.

Fluid specification, labor, location, and fees
Transmission fluid is vehicle-specific; different types are not generally interchangeable. Check the owner’s manual for the required specification. The labor rate, location, required parts, and whether taxes or fees are included also affect the final bill. RepairPal advises following the vehicle’s specified procedure and fluid requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare quotes
- Ask for a written, itemized estimate for your vehicle and location.
- Confirm whether the work is a drain and refill, includes filter service, or is a flush.
- Ask which fluid specification and parts the shop will use, and whether the filter is included.
- Check that labor is listed separately and ask whether taxes, shop fees, or other charges are included.
- Compare estimates only when they cover the same procedure, parts, and fees.
Because RepairPal’s national estimate excludes taxes and fees, compare the shop’s out-the-door total with the full scope of work stated—not just the headline price.
