The Google Guys: What “Retiring at 46” Really Meant

Larry Page and Sergey Brin left Alphabet’s top executive roles in December 2019, but they did not retire from the company. They said they would stay involved as co-founders, shareholders and board members. Sundar Pichai, then Google’s CEO, became Alphabet’s CEO and continued leading Google as well.

What changed in December 2019?

On December 3, 2019, Alphabet announced that Page would step down as CEO and Brin as president. Alphabet’s board approved Pichai as CEO, effective immediately; he would lead both Alphabet and Google. Alphabet’s SEC filing records the transition.

The distinction matters: leaving executive office is not the same as retiring from a company altogether. In their joint letter announcing the change, Page and Brin said they planned to remain “actively involved as board members, shareholders and co-founders.” They also said they would continue talking with Pichai regularly, especially about topics they cared about.

Why did Page and Brin say they were stepping back?

The founders described the change as a simpler management structure, not an exit. They wrote: “With Alphabet now well-established, and Google and the Other Bets operating effectively as independent companies, it’s the natural time to simplify our management structure.” They added: “Alphabet and Google no longer need two CEOs and a President.”

They framed the company’s age as a metaphor for organizational maturity: “Today, in 2019, if the company was a person, it would be a young adult of 21 and it would be time to leave the roost.” That was their explanation for the timing; the letter does not say that their personal ages caused the transition.

Were they actually 46?

EE Times described both founders as 46 in its retrospective commentary, “The Google Guys: Retiring at 46”. The ages require a date qualification: Alphabet’s proxy dated April 25, 2019 listed Page as 46 and Brin as 45. That earlier snapshot does not establish both of their ages on December 3. The company’s 2020 proxy records that Page’s Alphabet CEO term and Brin’s Alphabet president term ended in December 2019. Alphabet’s 2020 proxy

How does their age compare with founder research?

A 2018 National Bureau of Economic Research working paper found a mean founder age of 45.0 among the 1 in 1,000 fastest-growing new ventures. The result applies to that narrowly defined group, not to entrepreneurs generally, and it does not explain Page and Brin’s decision. NBER Working Paper 24489, “Age and High-Growth Entrepreneurship”

What “retirement” means in this story

The headline’s “retiring” is rhetorical. Page and Brin relinquished Alphabet’s CEO and president posts while retaining board, shareholder and co-founder roles. Pichai took on Alphabet’s top executive job alongside his Google leadership, while the founders said they would remain involved without managing the companies day to day.
