Re:

Why Are Crocs Being Banned in Some Schools?

Crocs rules vary by school. Learn why some schools ban them, when a heel strap is required, and why PE or lab rules may call for different shoes.

Crocs are not banned in every school, and there is no single nationwide rule. Some schools prohibit them altogether; others allow them only with the heel strap engaged or bar them for PE, labs, and other activities where footwear must stay secure or fully cover the foot.

Why some schools restrict Crocs

Schools that limit Crocs generally point to safety during movement or particular activities, and sometimes to consistent enforcement of a dress code. The rules are local: the policies cited below range from conditional permission to an all-day prohibition, and they do not establish how common bans are nationally.

Keeping footwear secured

A recurring concern is whether the shoe is held on the foot. Gwinnett County Public Schools’ 2024–25 guidance allows Crocs for PreK–5 students when they are in “sport mode,” with the heel strap engaged. The district notes that younger students run at recess and describes slides and flip-flops without heel straps as a possible safety hazard. Its guidance allows Crocs and slides for grades 6–12, except in some classes where safety is a concern. Read Gwinnett County’s dress guidance.

Rocky Mount Preparatory School took a stricter approach. In an October 31, 2024 letter, Head of School Dr. Heather D. Collins said Crocs Clogs would no longer be allowed beginning December 2, 2024. The letter cited repeated uniform violations because students were not wearing the heel strap and some had removed it, along with safety concerns for gym activities. Collins wrote: “This change is being introduced to address repeated school-wide dress code violations and safety concerns regarding footwear for gym activities.” See the school’s letter.

Different shoes for PE and gym

Some schools distinguish ordinary classroom wear from physical education. Ephrata Area School District’s September 2025 committee agenda includes code language barring Crocs during PE and requiring sneakers or tennis shoes; its middle-school section says sneakers are required for PE. See the Ephrata agenda.

Midland ISD’s Emerson Elementary page allows Crocs when the heel strap is correctly across the heel, but tells students to bring sneakers for PE. The school says Crocs are unsuitable for PE because they are not supportive athletic shoes, may break easily, and can cause injuries. That is the school’s stated rationale, not an independently quantified medical finding. Read Emerson Elementary’s dress code.

Foot coverage in labs and other activities

Some activities call for more than a secured heel. DSST Public Schools’ 2024–25 dress code generally permits closed-toe Crocs but disallows Crocs and sandals during certain labs or activities when the school requires the foot to be completely covered. See DSST’s dress code.

How to check whether your child can wear Crocs

  1. Check the current handbook or dress-code page. Look for rules on clogs, sandals, slides, heel straps, and prohibited footwear; a rule may cover all-day wear or only a particular grade or setting.
  2. Check activity-specific requirements. Review PE and gym rules separately from ordinary school dress, and look for requirements for labs, shop, recess, or other activities.
  3. Confirm the strap and coverage conditions. If Crocs are allowed, find out whether the heel strap must be engaged and whether the activity requires fully covering the foot.
  4. Ask the school about exceptions or enforcement if the written rule is unclear. Do not assume a rule at another school—or a general district guideline—applies to your child’s school.

Dress-code rules can also raise fairness questions. New York City Public Schools’ guidance says dress codes should be justified and applied equally and without discrimination. That is NYC guidance, not a universal legal rule for every school or jurisdiction. Read NYC Public Schools’ guidance.

What is not established about school Crocs bans

The cited policies show that individual schools may prohibit Crocs, require the heel strap, or restrict them for specific activities. They do not provide a reliable national count of schools with bans, or a statistic showing how many injuries Crocs cause. A secondary article discusses school bans and safety claims, but it does not establish nationwide prevalence. Check your own school’s current policy rather than treating examples from other districts as a national standard.
