Diamond Comic Distributors filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on January 14, 2025. The case later converted to Chapter 7 effective at midnight on December 31, 2025, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. A 2026 agreement addressed publishers’ unsold consigned inventory that had remained in a Mississippi warehouse.
What happened to Diamond Comic Distributors?
The bankruptcy began as a Chapter 11 case, but it is now a Chapter 7 case. The court lists Morgan W. Fisher as the Chapter 7 trustee appointed when the case converted. The case covers four jointly administered debtors: Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc.; Comic Exporters, Inc.; Comic Holdings, Inc.; and Diamond Select Toys & Collectibles, LLC. Court case information describes the businesses as distributors of comics, graphic novels, toys, games and pop-culture merchandise, operating under names that include Alliance Games Distributors, Collectible Grading Authority and Fandomworld.
Chapter 11 generally allows a business to seek a reorganization or sale under bankruptcy-court supervision. Chapter 7 instead places a trustee in charge of winding down and liquidating the debtor’s property, subject to bankruptcy law and court oversight. The change in chapter is important: Diamond’s case should not be described as still being Chapter 11.
What happened to publishers’ inventory?
One unresolved issue after the original filing was publishers’ consigned stock stored in a Mississippi warehouse. Publishers Weekly reported on August 7, 2026, citing court documents, that the Chapter 7 trustee reached an agreement with a group of publishers to address remaining inventory. The publishers in the group included Ablaze, American Mythology, Avatar Press, Action Lab, Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Green Ronin, Living the Line, Paizo, Udon and Zenescope; Boom and Dynamite also joined. Publishers Weekly’s account reported these terms:

Why did Diamond file for bankruptcy?
Diamond was founded in 1982 and served as a major distribution link between comic-book publishers and retailers. In coverage of the filing, the company attributed much of its financial trouble to losing exclusive distribution deals with Marvel Comics and DC Entertainment. Bloomberg Law described those lost deals as the main stated source of Diamond’s financial trouble; that is the company’s reported explanation, not a finding that one factor alone caused the bankruptcy. Bloomberg Law’s January 16, 2025 report provides that contemporaneous account.

Publishers Weekly reported that major publishers had shifted to competitors such as Lunar Distribution, while Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster had entered the direct market alongside their traditional book channels. Those changes affected the distribution landscape, but they do not mean every publisher or retailer moved to the same replacement.
What were Diamond’s reported finances at the time of filing?
Figures reported around the January 2025 filing are historical snapshots, not current balances or valuations. Publishers Weekly reported that Diamond sought $41 million in debtor-in-possession financing from JPMorgan Chase and that an affiliate of Universal Distribution made a $39 million stalking-horse bid for Alliance Game Distributors. It also reported current assets and total liabilities in ranges of $50 million to $100 million each, and listed Penguin Random House as the largest creditor, owed $9.2 million. Publishers Weekly’s filing coverage reports these filing-era figures.

Where are comics distributed now?
There is no single replacement distributor established for every publisher and retailer. Distribution arrangements differed by publisher, sales channel and retailer coverage. For example, IDW said in its third-quarter 2025 filing that some retailers formerly served through Diamond were then served directly by Penguin Random House. IDW also said it did not know whether retailers outside PRH’s coverage would receive a long-term solution in a timely way. That disclosure describes IDW’s situation at that time, not the entire market. IDW’s Q3 2025 filing sets out that uncertainty.
Accordingly, a comic shop’s current ordering route depends on the publishers and products it carries. The Diamond bankruptcy did not create one universal successor channel.
