How OSRAM Evolved From Light Bulbs to Optoelectronics

OSRAM’s shift toward LEDs and optoelectronics unfolded alongside major corporate changes, from its Siemens spin-off to its place within ams OSRAM.

OSRAM’s shift from light bulbs to optoelectronics was gradual: traditional lamps remained part of its business as the company developed halogen lighting, LEDs and other semiconductor technologies. Its corporate history is a separate story: OSRAM Licht AG spun off from Siemens in 2013, ams acquired it in 2020, and the OSRAM brand became part of ams OSRAM in 2021.

What changed in OSRAM’s technology?

OSRAM’s history is not a simple replacement of bulbs by chips. The company’s timeline traces a progression from conventional lamps through halogen lighting and early LEDs to semiconductor light sources and optical technologies. The key change was an expanding portfolio: products that generate light were joined by components and systems that use light and sensing technology.

From lamp brand to LED development

OSRAM was registered as a brand in 1906. In 1919, several companies consolidated lamp production under the OSRAM name. Those milestones distinguish the registration of the brand from the later consolidation of production, which the company’s FAQ describes as its founding.

The technology milestones followed over decades. The company timeline records halogen lighting from 1967, early colored and infrared LEDs in the 1970s, a white-converted LED in 1996, and thin-film technology in 2001 as a step toward brighter, higher-performance LED chips. This was an evolution within a lighting business, not an overnight move away from lamps.

OSRAM Base Classic A 60 FR LED Bulb with E27 Socket, Bulb, Pack of 3, 8.5 W, 806 lm, 2700 K, Warm White Light, Lower Heat Generation, Very Low Energy Consumption, Long Life
  • Pleasant light: classic LED lamp with good light quality and warm white light colour. The LED lamp immediately produces 100% light without warm-up time
  • Very robust: the product is very resistant to shocks and vibrations thanks to the advanced LED technology
  • Long service life: the classic LED lamp impresses with a long service life of up to 10,000 hours and is therefore particularly energy efficient
  • Energy-saving: the LED lamp consumes very little energy. It is therefore very suitable for longer use and also saves electricity
  • Optimal temperature: unlike standard reference products, the LED lamp offers lower heat generation and thus ensures a pleasant temperature

What “optoelectronics” means here

Optoelectronics brings together light and electronics: semiconductor components can emit light, detect it, or help control how it is used. In OSRAM’s case, the portfolio broadened beyond replacement lamps and luminaires to include semiconductor light emitters, optical sensors and related technologies used in areas such as mobility, industry, medical technology and consumer electronics. Those application areas reflect the current company’s own description.

How did OSRAM’s ownership and corporate structure change?

The OSRAM brand, OSRAM Licht AG and today’s ams OSRAM are related, but they are not interchangeable names for one unchanged company. The major corporate milestones help separate the brand’s history from ownership and business structure.

Year Milestone What it means
1906 OSRAM registered as a trademark The brand’s registration predates the 1919 consolidation of lamp production.
1919 Lamp production consolidated under OSRAM The FAQ identifies the merger of the lighting businesses of Auergesellschaft, Siemens & Halske, and AEG as the company’s founding.
2013 OSRAM Licht AG spun off from Siemens and began separate trading OSRAM became a separately traded company; its portfolio still included lamps, LED opto semiconductors, control gear, luminaires and lighting solutions.
2016 LEDVANCE introduced as an OSRAM spin-off LEDVANCE says it is now owned by MLS Co., Ltd.; this does not by itself establish every brand-licensing or asset-transfer detail.
9 July 2020 ams completed its acquisition of OSRAM Licht AG ams said it held 69% of OSRAM shares following the takeover offer and additional purchases.
2021 The OSRAM brand became part of ams OSRAM The group’s brand timeline describes this as the point the brand joined ams OSRAM.

The 2013 separation from Siemens

OSRAM Licht AG’s shares began trading separately on 8 July 2013 after its spin-off from Siemens. The company’s announcement at the time described a business that still spanned traditional lamps as well as LED semiconductors and other lighting products. The separation therefore changed corporate ownership structure without marking the end of the lamp business.

The 2020 acquisition and 2021 brand milestone

ams announced that it had completed the acquisition of OSRAM Licht AG on 9 July 2020. Then-CEO Alexander Everke called the transaction “a vital milestone” in the companies’ path toward combining in sensor solutions and photonics. That was the company’s stated strategic ambition, not an independent assessment of the deal’s results.

ams OSRAM’s brand history dates the OSRAM brand’s incorporation into ams OSRAM to 2021. This brand milestone followed the acquisition and should not be confused with either the 2013 Siemens spin-off or the 2020 closing date.

What does ams OSRAM make today?

ams OSRAM describes itself as a light and sensor technology company. Its portfolio combines semiconductor-based light emitters, optical sensors, CMOS integrated circuits and software with traditional lighting products. In its 2024 annual report, the company identifies Opto Semiconductors and CMOS Sensors and ASICs as semiconductor-focused units, while Lamps & Systems covers traditional lamps and lighting products, including automotive applications.

What the history means for OSRAM products

For a reader considering an OSRAM LED replacement bulb, the technology shift explains why a legacy lighting brand now offers semiconductor-based products. It does not make every LED lamp compatible with every fixture or vehicle. Check the socket, voltage and intended application; for automotive retrofit lamps, also verify local road-use rules. This article does not assess or recommend a particular model.
