Reporting said the airline began making redemption prices more variable in March 2025, so the points needed can differ by itinerary. To decide whether to use points or cash, compare both prices for the exact flight you want.
What changed in Southwest Rapid Rewards?
Southwest made the cost of booking flights with Rapid Rewards points more variable. Previously, points prices were already related to fare prices but were described as relatively predictable. The change reported in March 2025 means the points required can vary more from flight to flight. NerdWallet’s coverage discusses the shift; the exact points price for a booking is the relevant figure for members.

This is a change to redeeming points—spending them on travel. It is separate from changes to how members earn points through fares or credit-card purchases.
Should you use Southwest points or pay cash?
Compare the cash fare and points price for the same itinerary, at the same time, before booking. A broad cents-per-point estimate can help frame the comparison, but it cannot guarantee the value you will get for a particular flight.

The Points Guy’s March 2026 travel guide reported an observed range of roughly 1.1 to 1.7 cents per point. That is the guide’s reported range, not an official fixed Southwest valuation or a promise about any particular booking. Read the guide.
How much are Southwest points worth?
There is no single guaranteed value established for every Rapid Rewards point. Because redemption prices vary by flight, the practical value depends on the cash fare and points price offered for the itinerary you are considering. Treat general estimates as reference points, not as a booking quote or a promise of what your points will be worth.

How this differs from earning points
Southwest also changed how many Rapid Rewards points members earn across fare classes in 2025. That earning-side change is distinct from variable redemption pricing: one affects the points accumulated, while the other affects the points charged for a flight.
The airline’s co-branded credit-card refresh also changed earning categories and benefits, with more emphasis on dining, grocery and gas purchases in some card categories. Terms vary by card and may change, so check the current terms for a specific card before applying. These earning features do not determine the points price of a particular flight.
