If you want help-desk or desktop-support work, compare CompTIA A+ with Cisco CCST IT Support. For cloud fundamentals, consider AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Google Cloud Digital Leader, or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals. Networking and cybersecurity credentials make more sense when they match a specific direction and the foundation you already have.
The ten options below are a curated set of starting points, not a measured ranking. A certification can organize learning and document knowledge, but none of the sources cited here establishes that a credential guarantees a job, interview, or salary. Because exam details can change, confirm the issuer’s current requirements, price, language availability, and renewal rules before paying.
How to choose your first IT certification
Start with the work or skills you want to pursue—not with whichever credential is most frequently called “essential.” A support credential, a cloud-literacy exam, and a networking certification test different kinds of knowledge.
- Choose a target: help desk and desktop support, networking, cloud fundamentals, or cybersecurity.
- Match depth to your foundation: a credential described as foundational may suit a newcomer better than one requiring substantial technical practice.
- Compare the full commitment: exam cost, preparation materials, possible retakes, exam format, language and regional availability, and renewal requirements all matter.
- Check local job postings: use them to see which skills and credentials are relevant in your area. Treat certification as one part of a learning plan that also includes hands-on practice.
For example, Cisco CCST IT Support has an explicit support-task focus, while AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner tests foundational cloud knowledge rather than hands-on implementation or troubleshooting. Google Cloud Digital Leader emphasizes cloud capabilities and organizational use cases. Those are different outcomes, not direct substitutes.

10 IT certifications to consider as a beginner
1. CompTIA A+ — broad IT support foundations
A+ is a candidate for learners aiming at help-desk or desktop-support work and seeking broad foundations in hardware, operating systems, and troubleshooting. The current exam code, fee, and prerequisites are not established by the issuer information cited in this article, so verify them with CompTIA before choosing an exam or buying a study guide.
2. Cisco CCST IT Support — entry-level support tasks
Cisco describes its CCST IT Support exam as entry-level. Its published coverage includes queue and time management, documentation, troubleshooting, assisting end users, managing computer components, and identifying security threats. Cisco lists the exam fee as US$125 on its CCST IT Support exam page. This is an exam fee, not the total cost of preparing for certification.
Rank #2
3. Google IT Support Professional Certificate — course-based support learning
This course-based support credential appears in recent beginner comparisons as an option for people starting from scratch. Current course contents, price, and credential terms are not confirmed here through a Google source; check the provider’s current listing before enrolling.
4. CompTIA Network+ — networking fundamentals
Network+ is a networking-focused option to investigate if that is your intended direction. Its current requirements and fee are not confirmed here against an official CompTIA page, so do not rely on an assumed exam version or price.
Rank #3
5. Cisco CCST Networking — entry-level networking path
Cisco positions CCST Networking toward entry-level network technician and customer-support roles. Cisco says CCST credentials have no prerequisites and lists each CCST exam at US$125 on its CCST FAQ. Check the exam page for current details and confirm the fee for your location.
6. AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner — introductory cloud literacy
AWS describes Cloud Practitioner as a starting point for people with no prior IT or cloud experience. Its CLF-C02 exam guide groups the material into cloud concepts, security and compliance, cloud technology and services, and billing, pricing, and support. AWS says the exam is not a hands-on implementation or troubleshooting test. The issuer lists a US$100 exam fee, a 90-minute exam, and three-year validity on its certification page; see the CLF-C02 exam guide for scope. These are issuer-published details and may vary by region or change.
7. Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) — cloud-fundamentals candidate
AZ-900 is a cloud-fundamentals option named in recent comparison material. The current exam scope, price, and prerequisites are not confirmed here from Microsoft’s credential page. Verify those details with Microsoft before buying preparation materials or booking an exam.
8. Google Cloud Digital Leader — cloud concepts and business use cases
Google Cloud Digital Leader covers foundational Google Cloud concepts and business use cases. Google lists no prerequisites, recommends familiarity with collaborating with technical professionals, and describes a standard 90-minute exam. Its published standard fee is US$99 plus applicable tax, and the certification is valid for three years. Confirm details on the Google Cloud certification page, since fees and availability can change.

9. CompTIA Security+ — security-focused direction
Security+ is a cybersecurity-focused candidate, but that does not make it the right first certification for every newcomer. Its current exam version and issuer guidance are not verified here. Check CompTIA’s current information and consider whether you have enough foundational knowledge for the material before committing.
10. Cisco CCNA — a deeper networking direction
CCNA may suit someone committed to networking and ready for a more technical direction than an introductory cloud-literacy exam. Cisco’s CCST FAQ says CCNA has no formal certification prerequisite, but advises candidates to check its home page for recommended knowledge and experience. “No prerequisite” does not mean no preparation is needed.
Quick Recap
Compare the options by the outcome you want
| Goal | Options to compare | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Help desk or desktop support | CompTIA A+; Cisco CCST IT Support; Google IT Support Professional Certificate | Compare broad troubleshooting foundations with Cisco’s stated support-task coverage and a course-based learning option. Confirm current details for A+ and Google before paying. |
| Networking | CompTIA Network+; Cisco CCST Networking; Cisco CCNA | These are networking-oriented candidates at different apparent levels. Confirm current exam scope and preparation expectations with each issuer; Cisco says CCST has no prerequisites and CCNA has no formal certification prerequisite. |
| Cloud fundamentals | AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner; Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900); Google Cloud Digital Leader | Choose based on the cloud platform or use cases you want to learn. Detailed issuer-published exam information is available here for AWS and Google Cloud; verify current Microsoft details directly. |
| Cybersecurity | CompTIA Security+ | It is a security-focused candidate, not a universal beginner choice. Verify current exam details and assess your foundation first. |
What to check before spending money
- Exam version and scope: make sure your study materials match the current exam. AWS, for example, identifies its Cloud Practitioner guide as CLF-C02.
- Total cost: distinguish the exam fee from training, books, practice resources, taxes, and retakes. The listed Cisco, AWS, and Google fees are issuer-published exam prices, not all-in preparation costs.
- Availability: check regional pricing, language options, scheduling, and any local terms on the issuer’s current page.
- Renewal: confirm how long the credential remains valid and what is required to maintain it. The three-year validity figures given above apply to the specified AWS and Google credentials.
- Study resources: if you buy a CompTIA A+ study guide or A+ exam prep book, match its edition and exam code to CompTIA’s current exam information.
