Using VOO’s four most recently reported quarterly distributions through June 2026, the estimate is 817 shares for $6,000 a year, or a $500 monthly average, before taxes. That assumes the next four quarters distribute the same $7.3503 per share as the trailing four quarters. VOO pays quarterly—not monthly—so the cash arrives in varying quarterly amounts rather than as $500 deposits each month.
How the 817-share estimate is calculated
A $500 monthly income target equals $6,000 over a year ($500 × 12). Vanguard reported these four recent VOO income distributions:
| Distribution | Per share |
|---|---|
| 2025 Q3 | $1.7447 |
| 2025 Q4 | $1.7710 |
| 2026 Q1 | $1.8724 |
| 2026 Q2 | $1.9622 |
| Total for four quarters | $7.3503 |
The figures are Vanguard’s reported per-share VOO distributions for those quarters. Vanguard’s VOO product page lists the distribution schedule as quarterly.
- Divide the annual target by the four-quarter total: $6,000 ÷ $7.3503 = approximately 816.3 shares.
- Round up to the next whole share: 817 shares.
At the same $7.3503 per-share annual distribution, 817 shares would produce about $6,005.20 over four quarters, or an annualized average of about $500.43 per month. The calculation is a historical illustration, not a prediction of future income.

What “$500 a month” means for VOO
The monthly figure is the annual target divided by 12; it does not describe VOO’s payment schedule. Since distributions are quarterly, cash payments come in quarterly installments, and their amounts can differ. Vanguard’s reported four-quarter total is the basis for the average, not a promise of equal payments or a monthly deposit.
Why the estimate can change
VOO’s distributions are not fixed. If the fund’s next four quarterly payments total less than $7.3503 per share, 817 shares would generate less than $6,000 for that year; if they total more, they would generate more. The calculation also assumes you receive the stated per-share cash distributions. It does not account for taxes, reinvestment, price changes, purchase timing, or future distribution changes.

Distribution history versus dividend yield
Vanguard reported a 1.07% dividend yield for VOO as of June 30, 2026. That dated yield is a separate fund statistic, not a guaranteed payout rate. The share estimate above uses the dollar amounts of four reported distributions rather than applying that yield to an investment value.
