Before accepting a Texas job, compare the written offer with the costs and practical requirements of the specific city or county where you would live. Texas is not one housing or labor market: wages, housing costs, commute needs, insurance rates, and local vehicle requirements vary by destination.
Compare the job offer with the cost of living where you would move
Start with the role, not a statewide salary impression. Use the Texas Workforce Commission’s labor-market and career tools to examine wages, job postings, occupational projections, and information for the destination region. Its county-oriented self-sufficient wage resources model basic needs such as housing, child care, food, health care, transportation, taxes, and miscellaneous costs. Treat these as planning inputs—not a forecast of your household’s expenses or a promise that a particular job is available.
Build a household comparison around the actual offer and destination. Include base pay and variable compensation, benefit costs and the health-plan start date, housing, utilities, transportation and likely commute, child care if relevant, insurance, and moving expenses. Ask the employer whether relocation support, remote-work arrangements, or a delayed start date are included in the written offer.
For a home purchase, Texas has no state property tax, but counties levy property taxes. Check the specific property’s current taxing jurisdictions with the local appraisal district or tax assessor-collector. The absence of a state property tax does not by itself show that a home—or a rental—is affordable. Texas.gov’s property-tax information explains the state and local distinction.

Check benefits and insurance before setting a move date
A job transition can leave a gap between one health plan ending and another beginning. Ask the new employer when coverage starts and whether a waiting period applies; check the end date of your current coverage before choosing a move or resignation date. Depending on your circumstances, temporary coverage through COBRA or state continuation may be available. The Texas Department of Insurance’s health coverage guidance describes options to investigate.
Moving can also change auto, renters, or homeowners insurance rates. Request quotes for the address you are considering and ask your insurer when a new address must be reported. Compare policy terms as well as premiums.

Plan your Texas driver-license and vehicle deadlines
Driver license: up to 90 days
Texas.gov says you may drive with a valid, unexpired out-of-state license for up to 90 days after moving to Texas. For a Texas license, review the Department of Public Safety’s application requirements and use its document-check tool. Applicants may need proof of identity and Texas residency, citizenship or lawful presence where applicable, and Social Security number. DPS says new residents surrendering an out-of-state license must provide vehicle registration; applicants must also provide insurance proof or a statement that they do not own a vehicle. Schedule an office visit and confirm the documents that apply to your circumstances.
Vehicle: registration within 30 days
Texas.gov gives new residents 30 days to register a vehicle. DPS guidance says new residents must have the vehicle inspected, then register and title it within 30 days; it also requires proof of financial responsibility. The cited DPS page is dated 2020, so check current rules before acting. Emissions testing applies in designated counties, not uniformly statewide. Review the DPS new-resident inspection and registration guidance and confirm county requirements.
Possible $90 new-resident vehicle tax
A $90 new-resident motor vehicle tax may apply if you bought a vehicle outside Texas and it was previously registered in your name elsewhere. The Comptroller’s March 2026 guide says: “The $90 new resident tax is the new resident’s responsibility and must be paid within 30 calendar days from the vehicle’s first use in Texas (60 calendar days for active duty military personnel).” Other vehicle histories may be subject to motor vehicle use tax, and exceptions apply. Confirm your vehicle’s circumstances and current instructions with the county tax assessor-collector using the Texas Comptroller’s new-resident tax guidance.

Voter registration
If you are eligible and want to vote in Texas, plan around the deadline: the county voter registrar must receive your application at least 30 days before an election. Texas.gov describes in-person and mail options; its online process still requires you to print, sign, and mail the application. Eligibility includes U.S. citizenship, county residency, and being 18 by Election Day, along with other statutory rules. Check the Texas voter-registration page for current steps.

Choosing and hiring a mover
Get written moving quotes that spell out the scope, timing, and costs, then compare them on the same basis. Texas.gov links to moving tips, a checklist, and a tool for checking whether a moving company is licensed to conduct moves in Texas. Use its Moving to Texas resources to verify a mover rather than assuming a company is licensed.
