If your flight is diverted to Abu Dhabi, contact the operating airline before leaving the airport and confirm what it is arranging. A diversion does not automatically qualify you for an Etihad shuttle, a free transfer, or reimbursement. If you need to make your own way to Dubai, the main choices are a confirmed Etihad shuttle reservation, a connection to an intercity bus from Abu Dhabi Main Bus Station, or a taxi or pre-booked car.
First, confirm where your flight is going and who is arranging onward travel
Speak to the operating airline’s arrival or disruption desk before you leave the airport. Ask whether the flight will continue, return to Abu Dhabi, or end at another airport; whether onward transport or hotel support is being arranged; and whether passengers should wait for further instructions.
Abu Dhabi’s official travel advisory directs affected travelers to contact their airline or travel provider. It says alternatives may be supported where possible, but does not promise a Dubai transfer for every diversion. A separate Abu Dhabi Airports passenger welfare policy covers disruption scenarios, but it does not establish what a particular airline will provide or pay for your journey.
Do not assume a diverted flight landed in Abu Dhabi, or that Dubai was its original destination. Get the actual arrival airport and the carrier’s plan first.

Can you take the Etihad Shuttle after a diversion?
Possibly, but do not treat the shuttle as an automatic diversion transfer. Etihad’s shuttle page describes service between Zayed International Airport and Dubai or Al Ain. Its FAQ says passengers need a confirmed reservation and must book at least 24 hours before travel; it also lists eligibility limits and excluded categories. A diversion passenger who did not reserve a seat should ask airline staff whether they can be accommodated.
Etihad’s 26 June 2026 service update says the shuttle applies to Etihad-operated flights and names Economy and Business Value eligibility. Rules can differ by fare family or change over time, so check the live booking flow or ask the airline desk to confirm the rule for your ticket.
The Dubai stop is near Al Wasl Centre on Sheikh Zayed Road, not at every hotel or airport. Etihad estimates the Abu Dhabi–Dubai leg at about 75 minutes; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed arrival time. Plan for a further Dubai city transfer if your destination is elsewhere.
Taking a public bus: reach the Abu Dhabi station first
Abu Dhabi Mobility lists Dubai-bound E100, E101, and E102 services from Abu Dhabi Main Bus Station, with daily trips and a fare of AED 25 per passenger. Its inter-city bus information says tickets can be purchased at station customer happiness offices. The listed routes are not described as departing from Zayed International Airport, so budget time and money for a separate airport-to-station connection.

The airport’s A1 timetable shows service from Terminal A to Abu Dhabi city stops, including Al Zahiyah Bus Station. Check the current timetable and work out the onward connection to Abu Dhabi Main Bus Station before setting off; reaching Al Zahiyah is not the same as reaching the intercity departure point.
Abu Dhabi Mobility’s local bus fare information distinguishes local bus service from inter-city journeys. Do not assume a local-bus charge can be combined with the AED 25 intercity fare; check the payment rules for the complete trip.

A taxi can take you directly from the airport toward your Dubai destination, avoiding the bus-station connection. Abu Dhabi Mobility’s taxi fare page lists AED 20 airport flagfall, AED 1.82 per kilometre, and AED 0.50 per minute of waiting, plus a booking fee that varies between day and night. Those are fare components, not a quoted total for Abu Dhabi to Dubai; no route-specific all-in fare is established here.
Abu Dhabi Mobility lists taxi booking through its app or by telephone at 600 53 53 53 within the UAE and +971 2 4186000 from outside the UAE. Confirm the pickup point and current fare details with the provider before traveling. A pre-booked car may be more practical for a group, substantial luggage, or a late arrival, but verify the operator’s live price, pickup location, and cancellation terms directly.

Who pays for the transfer?
A diversion alone does not establish that the airline must pay for your trip to Dubai or reimburse a ride you arrange yourself. What the carrier provides depends on the particular flight and disruption. Ask the airline for instructions before booking independent transport; if you do pay for a ride, keep receipts and any written instructions from staff in case you later need to submit a claim. The available general guidance does not determine an individual reimbursement entitlement.
