Travel Insurance for War and Airspace Disruptions: What Policies Cover

War and airspace disruptions are not covered by one universal travel-insurance rule. Check the exact benefit, exclusion, advisory and timing clauses, then get the insurer’s answer in writing.

Often, standard travel insurance excludes losses caused by war or military action, but there is no universal rule for a flight cancelled, diverted or delayed by an airspace closure. Whether you can claim depends on the policy wording, the benefit you are claiming, the stated cause of the disruption, when the event became known, relevant travel advisories and the rules that apply to your policy. Ask the insurer for a written answer about your exact circumstances before relying on cover.

Why a war exclusion may affect an airspace-closure claim

Policies may define war or military action broadly, and an exclusion may affect some or all benefits. The Australian government’s Smartraveller guidance says military action, including war, civil war, rebellion or insurrection, is commonly excluded. A Malaysia policy-wording example also defines war broadly, including undeclared war and military force. These examples illustrate why the policy’s definitions and benefit-specific terms matter; neither establishes how every insurer treats every loss.

An airspace closure is a circumstance, not a guarantee of cover. It may lead to cancellation, diversion or delay, but the insurer may assess the claim according to the cause of the closure and the particular benefit claimed. Allianz Partners directs customers affected by disruption to check their policy and contact its claims team. Berjaya Sompo, for one named product, says certain delay and suspension costs tied to conflict-related airspace closures are excluded. That is a product-specific example, not a market-wide rule.

Check the benefit that matches your loss

“Travel insurance” is not one promise to pay every cost. Cancellation, interruption, delay, medical treatment and evacuation can have different triggers, exclusions, limits and evidence requirements. US government guidance, for example, distinguishes trip-cancellation insurance from medical coverage.

Benefit What to verify in the policy
Cancellation before departure Whether the stated reason for cancelling is an insured reason, how war or military-action exclusions apply, and whether the event was already known when you bought the policy.
Interruption after departure Whether the benefit applies to your circumstances, including an inability to continue the trip or a need to return early, and whether conflict-related exclusions apply.
Delay or extra expenses Whether the cause of the delay or suspension qualifies, and what the policy says about additional accommodation, transport and supporting receipts.
Emergency medical treatment Which treatment and locations qualify, and whether war, military action or travel against an advisory affects cover.
Medical transport or evacuation Whether the policy provides the specific transport or evacuation benefit, who must authorize it, and what exclusions and limits apply. Do not assume evacuation from a conflict zone is available.

The table is a checklist, not a statement that any one benefit is included. The actual policy wording controls; limits and conditions are policy-specific and are not established by general government guidance.

Travel advisories and when the event became known

Official advice can affect eligibility or cover, but the rule varies by insurer and jurisdiction. UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office guidance, updated 2 August 2024, warns that insurance may be invalidated if you travel to a destination where it advises against all but essential travel or all travel. The Government of Canada says many policies will not cover travel to places under its “avoid all non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” advisory levels. Neither statement should be treated as a universal rule for policies issued elsewhere.

Check advice for each destination and transit country, not only your final stop, and ask the insurer how the advisory wording applies to your exact policy and route. Also check the policy’s treatment of events that were publicized before purchase. The date the event became known, the date you bought the cover and the travel dates may matter; do not assume that buying a policy after a closure or conflict has become known will cover losses arising from it.

Conditions can change quickly. As of its 2 October 2026 update, the UK FCDO’s Ukraine advice says the airspace remains closed and advises against travel to specified areas. That is a dated example about Ukraine, not a statement about other routes, carriers or policies. Recheck current official advice and your flight status before travel.

Ask the airline or booking provider as well as the insurer

An airline cancellation and an insurance claim are separate routes. Government travel guidance indicates that a refund or credit may be more likely when the provider cancels, while insurance may exclude provider-caused delays or rescheduling. This does not establish a refund entitlement for every passenger: applicable rights depend on the route, jurisdiction and booking terms. Ask the airline or booking provider what rebooking, refund or credit options apply, and do not assume either the provider or insurer will pay until the relevant terms are confirmed.

How to check your policy before deciding what to do

  1. Find the exact policy version. Note the insurer, product, policy wording or certificate, purchase date, travel dates, destination and transit points. A summary page may not contain the definitions or exclusions that determine a claim.
  2. Locate the relevant benefit and exclusions. Search the wording for war, military action, terrorism, civil unrest, airspace closure, government order or advisory, airline cancellation, delay, interruption, missed connection, emergency medical treatment and evacuation. Check whether an exclusion applies to all benefits or whether the wording provides exceptions.
  3. Match each cost to a benefit. Separate the cancelled flight or trip from additional accommodation, replacement transport, medical expenses and any costs after departure. Ask about each category rather than asking only whether “the trip” is covered.
  4. Contact the insurer promptly and accurately. Give the actual route, dates, notice of cancellation or diversion, stated reason for the disruption, relevant advisory and purchase date. Ask what evidence it needs and whether it requires approval before you incur extra costs.
  5. Request the answer in writing. Ask the insurer to identify the policy clause and explain how it applies to each benefit and expense. Canadian government guidance recommends obtaining a written explanation from the insurer.
  6. Keep records and contact the provider. Save the airline’s notice, booking documents, insurer correspondence, receipts and records of any rebooking or refund offer. These help you establish what happened and what costs you actually incurred.

Questions to send the insurer

  • Does the war or military-action exclusion apply to cancellation before departure, interruption, delay costs, medical treatment and evacuation under this policy? Are any exceptions stated?
  • How do you classify the stated cause of this flight cancellation, diversion or airspace closure under the wording?
  • Does the current advisory for my destination or transit country affect any of these benefits, and does the policy treat different advisory levels differently?
  • Does the date this conflict, closure or disruption became public affect cover, given my purchase and travel dates?
  • Which extra accommodation or transport costs may qualify, what are the limits, and do I need approval before booking?
  • What documents should I submit, and how should I claim if the airline also offers a refund, credit or rebooking?

Rules and product terms differ across countries. Public guidance from the UK, Australia, Canada and the US, along with an example Malaysia policy wording, cannot determine an individual claim. The insurer’s written response against the exact policy is the practical way to clarify how it says the wording applies.
