Some animals from Warren Anderson’s exotic-animal collection at Tipperary Station in the Northern Territory ended up at Mary River Australian Safaris, a property associated with hunting, according to Anderson and published reporting. But the animals were split among several destinations, and the available accounts do not establish the complete fate of the collection or the present-day status of every animal.

What was at Tipperary Station?

PerthNow reported on 12 October 2019 that Anderson bought land at Tipperary Station in 1985 and established a 3,000-acre sanctuary. The outlet reported that his collection grew to about 1,900 exotic animals and hundreds of birds. Those are figures reported in 2019, not a verified current census.

The collection began with animals Anderson bought from Lord Alistair McAlpine when Pearl Coast Zoo in Broome closed. He later added imported animals and surplus animals from Australian zoos. The species reported at Tipperary included scimitar-horned oryx, addax, nyala, kudu, Nile hippopotamus, tapir, Grevy’s zebra and banteng. The species names and conservation descriptions reflect the reporting; they do not establish the animals’ current numbers or status.

What was the dispute over the animals?

PerthNow’s account dates a dispute with former station manager Kevin Freeman to 2003. Freeman accused Anderson of neglect, said feed had run out, and alleged that Anderson planned to kill the animals. Anderson disputed that account, saying hay had been fouled and eaten by introduced deer. PerthNow reported that Anderson obtained approval to travel with a rifle to shoot deer, and that his comments at Darwin Airport brought intense media attention.

According to PerthNow, the court case focused on two southern white rhinoceroses and collapsed after Freeman admitted overfeeding the animals and selling some. These details about the accusations and proceedings are the outlet’s account; they should not be read as a complete independent record of the case.

Where did animals from Tipperary go?

The reporting describes a complicated chain of transfers, rather than one confirmed destination for the entire collection. The accounts differ in detail, so Anderson’s later belief about which animals reached a Queensland park should not be treated as a complete transfer record.

Destination or transfer What the reporting says
Mareeba and Cairns, Queensland PerthNow reported that most animals were intended for Mareeba Wild Animal Park, owned by David Gill, and said Anderson believed only zebras reached Mareeba, which the article referred to as Cairns Wildlife Park. ABC News reported that relocation consultant Tim Husband arranged transfers from Tipperary to Cairns, including common hippos, pygmy hippos, rhinoceroses and rusa deer. It also reported that the animals were later moved again, with some sent to Indonesian parks and one pygmy hippo gifted to Taronga Zoo.
Mary River Australian Safaris, Northern Territory PerthNow reported that Mary River bought hundreds of animals and quoted an unnamed spokeswoman confirming that “quite a few” Tipperary animals were there. ABC News reported that, after Gill failed to pay freight, some animals did not make the planned Queensland move and Kevin Gleeson arranged for a number to go to Mary River. ABC cited reports that Gleeson purchased about 300 animals from Gill, likely including herds of scimitar-horned oryx, addax and deer. Mary River’s then-current owners confirmed that deer and oryx remained there in 2018.
Taronga Zoo ABC News reported that one pygmy hippo was gifted to Taronga Zoo and had bred there by the time of its 2018 investigation.
Still at Tipperary ABC News reported that two older tapirs remained at Tipperary and later died of natural causes.

ABC News’ investigation, published by Jesse Thompson on 13 November 2018, also reported that former Tipperary manager David Warriner recalled the animals were gone by the time he became general manager in 2007. Station manager David Connolly said the animals had been given away to other sanctuaries. PerthNow reported Anderson’s belief that a scimitar-horned oryx killed at Mary River came from his collection; that identification was not independently established in the reporting.

PerthNow also quoted Robert Nioa, who said Mary River owner Kevin Gleeson culled a few “non-productive” animals each year to help fund management of the remaining herd. This is a reported account of the property’s practices, not a complete record of which Tipperary animals, if any, were culled.

What happened to the pygmy hippo found outside the sanctuary?

ABC News reported that a pygmy hippo was shot by a pig hunter in the Douglas Daly region in 2009. The investigation said the animal had been missing after a newborn was not found during transfers. Former staff recalled that it later emerged from water and roamed the area. The account of how it escaped rests on recollections and an informed hypothesis, not a definitive finding.

What is known about the animals’ fate now?

The published accounts establish that animals went to multiple destinations, including Cairns, Mary River, Indonesian parks and Taronga Zoo, and that two older tapirs later died at Tipperary. They do not provide a complete disposition record or a current census of all the animals. Anderson described the animals as having had a “wonderful life” at Tipperary; that was his characterization, not an independent assessment of their welfare or conservation impact.
