Party City Holdco announced on December 21, 2024, that it would wind down its retail and wholesale operations and begin closing sales at about 700 stores. That was a corporate wind-down announcement—not confirmation that every Party City-branded shop closed permanently. The locator page currently lists locally owned franchise stores and Party City at Staples locations, so check a specific location before making a trip.
What happened to Party City?
Party City Holdco Inc. announced its retail and wholesale wind-down on December 21, 2024, and filed for Chapter 11 in the Southern District of Texas as part of that process. The company described the planned store footprint as approximately 700 locations. That figure referred to the announced wind-down, not a current count of every Party City-branded outlet. Party City’s locator now describes locally owned franchise stores and Party City at Staples locations.
Did every Party City store close?
No. The 2024 announcement covered Party City Holdco’s retail and wholesale operations; it does not establish that every independently owned franchise or later Party City at Staples location shut down. The locator page reviewed on October 4, 2026 lists those formats, but no exhaustive independent count of currently open Party City-branded locations is established. Check the locator and contact the specific store to confirm it is open, what it carries, and which services it offers.
When were the closing sales, and what were the discounts?
Gordon Brothers, which handled the store-closing sales, said on December 23, 2024, that sales were underway at 692 locations, with discounts of up to 50% off original ticketed prices. It also said purchases during that closing event were final. These were historical terms for the 2024 liquidation—not evidence of a current promotion or the policies at any surviving franchise or Party City at Staples location.

Why did Party City announce a wind-down?
Party City Holdco said it had tried to find a way to continue operating amid pressure from inflation on both costs and consumer spending. The company also said its 2023 restructuring eliminated nearly $1 billion in debt, but later macroeconomic headwinds proved too severe. That is the company’s explanation; the cited statements do not independently assess how much each factor contributed.
Can you still shop at Party City?
The locator page lists local franchise stores, Party City at Staples locations, and online shopping. It says online orders can ship to all 50 states. Same-day delivery of select helium-inflated balloons is limited to eligible ZIP codes, while pickup is available only at select franchise locations in Texas and New Jersey, according to the page. Inventory and services can differ by store, so verify details with the location before relying on them.
