There is no publicly verified figure for Mariah Carey’s personal earnings from “All I Want for Christmas Is You” in a typical year. Published estimates put the song’s annual earnings in the millions, but they measure different things: one 2024 estimate puts song-generated earnings at about $3.4 million a year, while a historical estimate for 2021 put global master and publishing revenue together at $6.16 million. Neither figure is an audited statement of Carey’s personal income.
What the published estimates say
The figures often quoted for the song are not directly comparable. Their dates, revenue streams and beneficiaries differ.

| About $3.4 million per year, quoted by Manatt in 2024 from entertainment attorney Peter Bromley | Estimated annual earnings generated by the song, as described by Bromley | It is not an audited figure for Carey’s personal annual receipts; the item does not give a detailed year-by-year calculation. | $6.16 million in total for 2021: about $4.5 million in master-recording revenue and $1.66 million in publishing royalties | Billboard’s historical estimate of global revenue across those two streams | It is not Carey’s personal earnings. The figures are reproduced in a 2023 amended complaint, which says Billboard estimated Carey’s share of master royalties at about $1.55 million. The amended complaint |
| About $100 million in accumulated royalties as of 2023 | An Associated Press estimate cited in a Library of Congress-hosted essay | It is a cumulative estimate, not a current annual amount or a verified sum paid personally to Carey. Library of Congress essay |
Manatt’s item also quotes Bromley estimating $103 million over 30 years and $9.8 million in royalties from 2 billion global Spotify streams. Those are his estimates, not audited totals or a public accounting of Carey’s share. Manatt’s 2024 item
Why song revenue is not the same as Carey’s take-home earnings
A recording can earn money through more than one rights stream. The master is the particular recorded performance; publishing concerns the underlying composition, including songwriting and publishing rights. Public performances can generate royalties as well. A headline figure that adds streams together describes revenue across rights and recipients, not necessarily what one performer receives.

The recording was released on Carey’s 1994 album Merry Christmas. Carey and Walter Afanasieff are identified as co-writers. How income is divided depends on contracts and rights allocations; the cited public estimates do not disclose enough of those terms to calculate Carey’s exact personal receipts. Manatt quotes Bromley explaining the distinction between recording and composition income: “If you’re a songwriter with no record revenue, it’s hard to make a living even if you’re making hits.” Manatt’s 2024 item
Why the song keeps generating seasonal attention
The song’s recurring holiday visibility helps explain why it remains a subject of earnings estimates, but chart position does not reveal a royalty payout. The Associated Press reported in March 2025 that it had reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for six consecutive years. That is evidence of repeated chart success, not a measure of Carey’s income in any particular year. Associated Press, March 20, 2025

What the 2025 lawsuit does—and does not—tell us
Songwriters Andy Stone, who performs as Vince Vance, and Troy Powers alleged that Carey’s song infringed their earlier song with the same title. In March 2025, the Associated Press reported that Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani granted summary judgment for Carey and Afanasieff; AP said the judge found the plaintiffs had not shown the songs were substantially similar. The case concerned the infringement claims, not a royalty audit or a determination of Carey’s yearly earnings. Associated Press, March 20, 2025

Before treating a reported amount as Carey’s annual income, check four things: the year or period measured, whether the estimate covers master revenue, publishing or both, whether it is global or limited to a territory, and whether the beneficiary is all rights-holders or Carey personally. Without those distinctions—and the relevant private contracts—an estimate for the song cannot establish a precise personal payout.
