India’s Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced the exclusive .bank.in internet domain for banks to strengthen cybersecurity and public confidence in digital banking and payments. The RBI directed specified banks to migrate from their existing domains by October 31, 2025—a deadline that has passed. The circular sets out the initiative and its intended benefits, but does not report how many banks migrated or whether fraud fell.

What is the .bank.in domain?

.bank.in is a dedicated internet domain intended for banks in India. RBI announced the initiative in its February 7, 2025 Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies, under the heading “Enhancing Trust in the Financial Sector through ‘bank.in’ and ‘fin.in’ domains.” Its April circular says the .bank.in domain is intended to address increased instances of digital-payment fraud.

RBI describes the goal as “strengthening the cybersecurity framework and enhancing public confidence in digital banking and payment systems.” That is a policy objective, not a reported fraud-prevention result.

Which banks did the RBI circular cover?

The April 22, 2025 circular applied to:

  • Commercial banks
  • Primary urban co-operative banks
  • State co-operative banks
  • District central co-operative banks

Who handles registration, and what was the deadline?

RBI named the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) as the operational registrar for .bank.in. IDRBT is authorized by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Banks were directed to contact IDRBT to begin registration and migration; the circular lists [email protected] for initiating the process.

Banks were advised to start migrating their existing domains and complete the process as soon as possible, and no later than October 31, 2025. That date has passed. The circular does not establish that every covered bank completed migration by then.

Does .bank.in stop online banking fraud?

No such guarantee is established by the circular. A dedicated domain is intended to strengthen cybersecurity and public confidence, but the RBI document does not provide evidence that the suffix alone prevents phishing, makes every page a customer encounters safe, or eliminates digital-payment fraud. It also reports no measured change in fraud and gives no migration-completion count.

For customers, the practical distinction is that .bank.in is part of a bank-focused initiative, not a complete safety test for every message or web page. Do not treat the domain ending by itself as proof that a site or communication is genuine.
