That does not settle whether bookings fell in a particular period, route, or booking channel: the 2025 article behind this title cannot be assessed from its accessible listing, which does not state its metric or evidence.
What the available numbers say about US flight bookings
Sojern’s summer 2026 travel-intent data, reported by Hospitality Technology and summarized by Sojern, points to growth in two broad categories: US outbound flight bookings were up 13% year over year, and domestic US travel bookings were up 15%. These are Sojern figures for its summer outlook, not government counts of completed passenger trips. The available summary does not specify a booking-snapshot date or enough detail about the dataset’s coverage to treat the percentages as a census of all US bookings. Those figures do not prove that bookings rose in every market or throughout every period. They do show why a claim about a nationwide “downward trend” needs a defined measure, geography, and comparison window before it can be evaluated.
Why the title’s claimed downward trend is hard to verify
The accessible listing for Nicole Kylie’s March 18, 2025 Simple Flying article gives its title and includes a “fear of flying” tag, but the article body and supporting dataset are not available in the listing. It therefore does not establish what “US flight bookings” measured, the dates compared, or whether fear of flying was demonstrated as a cause. A tag alone is not evidence for that explanation. The Simple Flying listing identifies the article but does not resolve those questions.

Different indicators can move in different directions. A booking count is not the same as a search, fare, available seat, ticket sold, or completed journey. A report about hotel searches, for example, cannot be used as a direct count of flight bookings. Before comparing claims, check the measure, traveler origin, route geography, time period, data provider, and whether the figure reflects intent or completed travel.
Why fares can rise while bookings also grow
Sojern’s summer 2026 outlook reports domestic US airfares up 25% year over year alongside increases in its US-origin booking figures. These measures can coexist: price and booking volume are separate observations, and their simultaneous movement does not establish that higher fares caused or prevented a change in demand.

For travelers managing a budget, the practical point is to evaluate the cost of a specific itinerary rather than infer affordability from a national booking trend. A higher reported airfare measure does not say what any individual route costs, while a rise in bookings does not mean that fares are low.

The available evidence is consistent with demand shifting among destinations, not simply disappearing. Sojern reports US bookings to Canada up 44% year over year in its summer 2026 outlook. That is a destination-specific figure, not a measure of all US flight demand. Its account also identifies geopolitical uncertainty and FIFA World Cup dynamics as influences on travel decisions and rerouting. These are reported factors and plausible context for changing destination patterns, not proof that either caused a nationwide fall in bookings.

Sojern separately reports US hotel searches down 16% year over year. That is hotel-search activity, not flight bookings; it should not be used to claim that fewer people booked flights. The distinction matters because travelers can research lodging, book flights, or choose destinations on different timelines.

What a traveler should take from the trend
- Do not treat an unspecified “downward trend” as a current national fact. The available summer 2026 Sojern booking measures show year-over-year growth in domestic and outbound categories.
