AWS CEO Matt Garman predicts that AI agents could have an impact on businesses comparable to the internet or cloud—but that is a forecast, not evidence that companies are already seeing returns on that scale. Speaking at AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas, he argued that agents could move AI toward material business results after many customers had yet to see returns matching its promise.
What did Matt Garman say about AI agents?
In a report published on 2 December 2025, ITPro quoted Garman saying: “This change is going to have as much impact on your business as the internet or the cloud.” He was referring to AI agents, and presented their business impact as something expected in the future—not as an outcome already demonstrated across companies. Garman also said he believed agents had brought AI to an inflection point. His case was that agents could help turn AI from a technical novelty into a source of meaningful business returns. In the same account, however, he acknowledged that customers had not yet seen returns commensurate with AI’s promise.
What would it take for agents to produce that kind of impact?
An agent is generally distinguished from a conventional chatbot or copilot by its ability to carry out tasks, potentially across multiple steps, rather than only respond to a prompt. The label alone does not establish how much autonomy a product has: practical impact depends on what it can do, which systems it can access, how long a task can run, and where people review or approve its actions.

- Task scope and duration: Does the system handle one bounded request, or coordinate a longer workflow?
- Human oversight: Can staff inspect, approve, interrupt, or reverse consequential actions?
- Integration: Can it use the organization’s relevant data and business systems reliably?
- Security and controls: Are permissions, policies, and monitoring appropriate to the work?
- Measured return: Does deployment improve a business outcome enough to justify implementation and operating costs?
These are useful questions for evaluating a particular deployment, but the available event coverage does not provide a standardized comparison of agent products or evidence that answers them across vendors.
What was AWS announcing alongside the forecast?
AWS event coverage connected the strategy to a mix of agent-building services and ready-made software offerings. Have businesses already seen returns on that scale?
The cited coverage does not establish that AI agents have already matched the historical business impact of the internet or cloud. It reports Garman’s forecast and the AWS strategy behind it, but supplies no directly relevant measure comparing agents’ business impact with either earlier technology.

There is also an adoption caveat. In a 5 December 2025 TechCrunch analysis, Forrester principal analyst Naveen Chhabra said: “Most enterprises are still piloting AI projects and are rarely at the levels of maturity AWS expects them to be to take advantage of the offerings that come out of these announcements.” That is an analyst’s assessment, not a measured sector-wide adoption rate. ITPro’s event coverage also relayed AWS executive claims that more than 100,000 companies used Amazon Bedrock and that more than 50 customers had processed over one trillion tokens through it as of the 2 December 2025 keynote. Those figures describe Bedrock usage, as claimed by Garman and reported at the event; they do not measure agent-driven business impact or independently verify returns.

What should business owners take from the claim?
For a business deciding whether to invest, the forecast is a reason to assess specific use cases—not proof that adopting an agent will pay off. Start with a task where the desired result and current costs can be measured. Compare the agent’s performance with the existing process, account for human review and error handling, and check that access controls fit the data and actions involved. A pilot’s results can then inform whether to expand it; the word “agent” by itself cannot.
The finance-relevant question is therefore not whether agents will be as consequential as the internet or cloud in the abstract, but whether a particular deployment delivers measurable value after its costs and risks. Garman’s comparison is ambitious; the cited reporting leaves that business outcome unsettled.
