A crypto-friendly bank is an informal term for a bank whose policies or services accommodate some cryptocurrency-related activity. For most consumers, that means being able to transfer money between a bank account and a crypto exchange—not necessarily buying, holding, or trading crypto through the bank itself. The exact services depend on the bank, exchange, customer, and jurisdiction.

What are crypto-friendly banks?

“Crypto-friendly bank” is not a formal legal category or a standardized package of services. The phrase may describe a bank that permits certain transfers to or from crypto exchanges, or a bank involved in broader services for crypto businesses and assets. A label alone does not establish what a particular customer can do.

For a retail customer, the most familiar meaning is access to the fiat-currency part of a crypto transaction: moving dollars from a bank account to an exchange and receiving dollars back after a sale. That is different from a bank offering crypto trading or holding cryptocurrency for a customer.

How does the bank-to-exchange process work?

A crypto exchange needs bank accounts to facilitate transfers between fiat currency and cryptocurrency, according to the Congressional Research Service. In a typical transaction, the bank handles the fiat-money transfer while the exchange handles the crypto account and trade.

  1. Move fiat currency to the exchange. You initiate a transfer from your bank account to your exchange account using a payment method supported by both providers.
  2. Trade on the exchange. Once funds are available there, you use the exchange to purchase cryptocurrency.
  3. Convert and withdraw when cashing out. You sell or convert crypto through the exchange, then request a fiat withdrawal to your bank account.

This describes the general arrangement, not a guarantee that a specific bank accepts transfers involving a particular exchange. Providers may differ on eligible payment methods, account types, holds, limits, fees, and processing times.

What crypto-related services might a bank offer?

Banking activity connected to crypto can extend beyond consumer transfers. In March 2025, the FDIC listed examples that include crypto-asset custody, maintaining stablecoin reserves, issuing digital assets, market making, acting as an exchange or redemption agent, blockchain settlement, node functions, finder activity, and lending. These are examples of possible activities, not a checklist of services offered by every bank or a consumer package implied by the phrase “crypto-friendly.” See the FDIC’s March 28, 2025 guidance.

Does crypto-friendly mean the bank holds your cryptocurrency?

No. Permission to transfer money to or from an exchange is not the same as a bank offering custody, safekeeping, trading, or another crypto product. If an institution advertises a crypto service, check exactly what it provides, which legal entity provides it, and which entity actually holds the crypto. The Federal Reserve, FDIC, and OCC issued a joint statement on July 14, 2025, describing existing risk-management considerations for banks providing or considering crypto-asset safekeeping; the agencies said the statement did not create new supervisory expectations. Read the joint announcement.

What changed in U.S. banking supervision in 2025?

Several U.S. federal banking agencies changed or clarified supervisory processes in 2025. Those actions concern oversight and risk management; they do not establish that every crypto activity is lawful, approved, insured, or offered by every bank.
