To move money safely, use only your bank’s and exchange’s official apps or websites, transfer from an account in the same legal name as your exchange account, and follow the exchange’s current deposit instructions exactly. Before sending, verify the amount, recipient, fees, limits and timing. Afterward, check the exchange’s available-to-withdraw balance: a deposit can appear or be tradable before it is eligible to cash out.
The examples below are U.S.-specific where noted. Banks and exchanges vary by country, currency, account type and transfer method, so the instructions and availability shown in your own accounts take precedence.
Choose the transfer method by checking both providers’ terms
ACH and wire transfers are different ways to move fiat currency between financial accounts. Neither is universally fastest, cheapest or safest for every customer. Compare the method offered by your bank with the exchange’s current funding options before deciding.
| What to check | ACH | Wire |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An electronic transfer between banks or credit unions, as described by the CFPB. | A separate common electronic method for moving money between bank accounts, as described by the CFPB. |
| Timing | Can take days to complete. The bank and exchange may show different stages of processing and availability. | Timing depends on the bank, exchange, and transfer details; check both providers’ estimates before sending. |
| Fees and limits | A bank or credit union may set limits or charge a fee. ACH payments may bounce if the account does not have sufficient funds, according to the CFPB. | Check the bank’s and exchange’s fees, limits and recipient requirements for the specific transfer. |
| Deposit details | Follow the exchange’s instructions for the selected bank-link or ACH route. | Use the exact beneficiary and reference information supplied for that wire deposit. |
For either method, confirm the supported currency and region, initiation steps, expected processing time, fees, limits and any withdrawal restriction. Do not infer that an exchange deposit method is available to you just because it appears in a general help article.

Prepare the accounts and verify deposit instructions
- Sign in through official channels. Open the bank’s and exchange’s known official app or type their website address yourself. Do not use payment details sent by an unsolicited caller, text or email.
- Confirm the account is ready. Complete any identity checks the exchange requires and make sure you can access its funding screen. Coinbase’s U.S. guidance, for example, requires a verified bank account in the customer’s legal name that matches the Coinbase account (Coinbase payment methods for U.S. customers).
- Select the right currency and method in the exchange. Open the current deposit or funding screen and choose the currency and transfer route you intend to use. Exchange options can vary by location and currency; Kraken says its available cash-funding methods depend on those factors (Kraken cash funding options).
- Copy the recipient and reference details exactly. Use the details displayed for that specific deposit. If the instructions require a reference, include it in the designated field. Kraken notes that a deposit may need the customer’s Public account ID as a reference when its instructions say so; missing information can delay crediting (Kraken deposit and withdrawal holds).
- Review before approving. Check the amount, destination account, currency, fees, limits and expected timing in both providers’ interfaces. Confirm that the bank account has enough available funds for the transfer and any applicable charges.
- Save the records. Keep the bank’s confirmation and the exchange’s deposit or transaction record so you can give both providers the relevant details if something goes wrong.
Track each stage of the deposit separately
A bank transfer can pass through several stages: initiated by the bank, received or processed by the exchange, credited to the exchange balance, available to trade, and available to withdraw or send elsewhere. These statuses are not interchangeable. Check the exchange’s transaction details and confirmation screen rather than assuming that a displayed balance can already be cashed out.
For a specific U.S. example, Coinbase says ACH deposits on Coinbase Exchange typically take 3–5 business days to complete, and a credited balance may remain unavailable to withdraw until Coinbase receives the funds. Coinbase also says the confirmation screen shows when a bank purchase or deposit will be available to send or cash out. These are provider-specific terms, not a general timeline for all Coinbase products or exchanges (Coinbase Exchange fiat deposits and withdrawals; Coinbase payment methods for U.S. customers).

Withdrawal holds can also depend on the funding route. Kraken’s funding guidance says cash deposits made via ACH Plaid are held from withdrawal for seven days. Check the current hold notice in your account because provider terms and eligibility may change (Kraken cash funding options).
Move money back to your bank with the same care
For a cash withdrawal, start from the exchange’s withdrawal screen and select a bank account and currency that the exchange supports for your location. Confirm the destination details, amount, fees, limits and estimated timing before submitting. Check whether funds are actually eligible for withdrawal and whether the exchange displays a hold or additional verification requirement.

Do not confuse withdrawing fiat to a bank with sending cryptocurrency to a wallet. A crypto transfer uses different destination details and can have different risks; this article’s steps concern fiat money moving between a bank account and an exchange.
What to do if a transfer is missing or incorrect
- Check the status and details first. Compare the bank confirmation with the exchange’s deposit instructions and transaction record. Verify the amount, currency, destination and any required reference.
- Contact the relevant providers promptly. For a wire-transfer problem, the CFPB advises contacting the company right away (CFPB wire transfer guidance). Contact the bank or transfer provider and the exchange using official support channels; provide the receipt and transaction details.
- Do not assume a mistaken transfer can be reversed or refunded. The outcome depends on the transfer type, circumstances and applicable rules. The CFPB explains that protections for international remittance transfers depend on whether the transaction and provider meet the relevant requirements (CFPB remittance transfer guidance).
Protect the money after it reaches the exchange
A bank transfer does not make crypto held on an exchange equivalent to a bank deposit. FINRA warns that crypto platforms can be hacked or fail, and that crypto wallets do not have the same depositor safeguards as U.S. banks and credit unions (FINRA Bitcoin Basics). Keep only the funds you intend to use on the exchange, secure the account using protections the provider offers, and understand where your assets are held before transferring them.
