You can buy Bitcoin with a credit card in Germany through a crypto-asset provider that serves German customers and accepts your card—but neither availability nor approval is guaranteed. Check the provider’s authorisation, confirm your card and issuer are compatible, compare the full euro charge with the Bitcoin you will receive, and review where the Bitcoin will be held before you confirm. These steps reduce avoidable payment and account risks; they do not make Bitcoin a safe investment.
1. Check the provider’s authorisation and German availability
Start with the legal entity that would serve your account, not just a familiar brand name, search result, or German-language website. Under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), authorisation and supervision requirements for crypto-asset service providers have applied since 30 December 2024. BaFin says an authorised provider’s approval is published in its company database and the ESMA MiCA register. An EU-authorised provider may offer services elsewhere in the EU after the relevant passport notification; check that the provider supports customers in Germany and that the entity named in its terms matches the register entry. BaFin’s explanation of current MiCA authorisation requirements is dated 22 January 2025 (BaFin).
Authorisation is a regulatory check, not an endorsement of Bitcoin or a guarantee against losses. BaFin also warns consumers about online trading platforms that lack required authorisation (BaFin, 6 June 2025).
2. Confirm that your card can be used
Card payment depends on three separate things: the exchange’s rules, the card type and authentication it accepts, and your issuer’s decision to allow the transaction. Check all three before relying on a card purchase.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Kraken
Kraken’s German customer payment page lists Visa and Mastercard purchases processed in EUR. The page lists a €10 minimum and a €5,000 purchase limit per seven days; these are Kraken limits shown on its support page, not market-wide rules, and may change. Its card instructions require a verified account, a Visa or Mastercard in the same legal name as the account holder, residence in a supported region, and 3D Secure for customers outside the US. See Kraken’s card instructions and German payment methods.
Coinbase
Coinbase’s European payment-method table describes 3D Secure card purchases as instant. However, Coinbase says it no longer supports linking new credit cards. Its guidance also says the card must support 3D Secure, some issuers block digital-currency purchases, and an issuer may add fees to existing linked credit cards. So the European table does not mean a German customer can newly link any credit card. Check the account’s available payment methods and Coinbase’s current guidance, “How do I buy cryptocurrency?”.

Before trying either service, ask your card issuer whether it permits Bitcoin purchases on your specific card and whether it treats them as cash advances or charges foreign-transaction fees. The issuer can decline a purchase even when the provider accepts the card type.
3. Make the purchase without exposing your account
- Open the provider independently. Type the known website address or use its official app rather than following an unsolicited message, investment advertisement, or link from someone offering help.
- Complete account verification. Follow the provider’s identity checks and use a payment card in the name required by its terms.
- Approve 3D Secure only for the purchase you initiated. Depending on your issuer, authentication may use a password, one-time PIN, or banking-app approval. Never give a one-time code to someone who contacts you or claims to be helping with an investment.
- Review the final order before confirming. Check the Bitcoin amount, total euro charge, payment card, account destination, and any displayed fee. Kraken says its card transaction fee appears on the final confirmation page; a spread may also be reflected in the quoted price.
- Confirm only if the total and details are right. Kraken says initiated card purchases are final and non-refundable. It also says a card purchase may trigger a withdrawal hold of up to 72 hours. Those are Kraken policies, not universal rules; check the provider’s current terms before submitting.
4. Compare the full cost—not just a fee label
The useful comparison is how much BTC reaches your account for the complete amount charged in euros. A displayed transaction fee may not capture a spread embedded in the Bitcoin price, and the card issuer may charge separately. A transaction that looks inexpensive by its fee line can therefore have a higher all-in cost than its headline suggests.

- Compare the final euro charge with the BTC amount shown in the confirmation screen.
- Look for the provider’s transaction fee and any difference between its quoted price and the price used to calculate the amount of BTC.
- Check with your issuer for a separate cash-advance, foreign-transaction, or other card charge.
- Check the provider’s current minimum, maximum, and any withdrawal restrictions; provider terms and limits can change.
5. Decide where the Bitcoin will be held
Buying Bitcoin and storing it are distinct decisions. You may leave it with the provider or move it to a wallet you control. Keeping it with a provider means your access depends on that account and provider. Self-custody gives you responsibility for safeguarding private keys and recovery information. The European supervisory authorities’ October 2025 warning asks consumers to consider the security of devices used to buy, store, or transfer crypto-assets and to hold private keys (ESA warning).
A hardware wallet is one optional category for people who choose self-custody; it is not required for a card purchase. It cannot prevent Bitcoin’s price from falling, protect you from every phishing attempt, or restore recovery information you lose. Before moving Bitcoin, make sure you understand the wallet’s backup and recovery process and can keep its credentials private.

6. Keep investment risk separate from payment security
Card authentication and provider checks address payment and account risks, not the risk of losing money on Bitcoin. BaFin warned on 13 January 2021 that crypto-assets can suffer substantial losses, including total loss, because of high volatility and possible illiquidity (BaFin’s risk warning). This is risk guidance, not a price forecast. Do not borrow or carry a credit-card balance to buy a volatile asset; interest and card charges can compound a loss.
