What do these warehouse abbreviations mean? This glossary explains common terms used in inventory systems, receiving, stock rotation and shipping. Definitions can vary by employer or warehouse management system (WMS), so use the local standard operating procedure (SOP) when a screen, label or document uses a term differently.

Core warehouse systems and identifiers

WMS — Warehouse Management System

Software used to manage warehouse operations and inventory, from goods receipt through shipment. The exact functions depend on the system and how the employer has configured it. Oracle’s WMS definitions describe terminology for its Warehouse Management Cloud product.

SKU — Stock Keeping Unit

An item-level identifier used to distinguish and track a product in inventory. A SKU identifies the item, not necessarily the particular carton, pallet or other unit currently being handled.

LPN — License Plate Number

A WMS identifier for tracking a logistics unit or container. Implementations differ: Oracle’s documentation describes an LPN as a barcode assigned to trailers, while other systems may use the identifier for handling units or containers. Check what the local system assigns an LPN to.

SAP’s glossary explains the term in that product context.

RF — Radio Frequency

In SAP Extended Warehouse Management terminology, RF refers to controlling and using handheld devices for warehouse operations. In practice, workers may see it in connection with scanner-based tasks; the exact prompts and workflow depend on the employer’s setup. SAP’s glossary uses RF in this context.

Receiving, stock rotation and warehouse flow

ASN — Advanced Shipment Notice

Advance information about a pending delivery, often including its expected contents. It helps receiving teams prepare for what is due to arrive. An ASN may be sent electronically or uploaded manually; Oracle describes it as similar to a packing list, but it is advance notice rather than the physical shipment itself. SAP’s glossary provides the product-context definition.

LIFO — Last In, First Out

A stock-rotation method in which the most recently stored goods are released first. The TESDA glossary lists the term, but it is not automatically suitable for every product or warehouse. Shipping and logistics terms

BOL — Bill of Lading

A shipping document associated with a freight shipment. The TESDA glossary describes it as issued by a carrier and listing shipment details. Its role differs from an ASN: a BOL is a shipping document, while an ASN gives advance information about an expected delivery. TESDA’s Warehouse Operations Level III glossary defines BOL.

ETA — Estimated Time of Arrival

The expected arrival time for a delivery. It is an estimate, not confirmation that the shipment has arrived. The TESDA glossary includes ETA. TESDA’s Warehouse Operations Level III glossary defines the term.

3PL — Third-Party Logistics

An outside provider that performs logistics services for another business, such as warehousing or fulfillment. Depending on the arrangement, services may also include inventory management. Oracle’s inventory terminology describes outsourced e-commerce logistics in this context.

Work instructions and related warehouse terms

SOP — Standard Operating Procedures

Documented instructions for carrying out a task or process. SOPs are especially important when a local abbreviation or scanner instruction differs from a general glossary definition. Follow the version approved for your workplace; the TESDA glossary describes SOPs as explicit instructions for achieving a specific goal. TESDA’s Warehouse Operations Level III glossary includes the term.

AMR — Autonomous Mobile Robot

A mobile robot that can move through a work area autonomously. The exact capabilities and role depend on the equipment and warehouse system; the term is included in the WMS.info warehouse glossary. WMS.info’s glossary lists AMR among warehouse terms.

AS/RS — Automated Storage and Retrieval System

A system that automates storing and retrieving inventory. Specific designs and workflows vary; WMS.info includes AS/RS in its warehouse glossary. WMS.info’s glossary lists the term.

BOPIS — Buy Online, Pick Up In Store

An order fulfillment option in which a customer places an order online and collects it from a store. It can connect retail order fulfillment with store inventory workflows; WMS.info includes the term in its glossary. WMS.info’s glossary lists BOPIS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cycle counting

A process for counting selected inventory at intervals rather than relying only on a single full inventory count. The exact schedule and reconciliation steps are set by the warehouse’s inventory controls. WMS.info includes cycle counting among its warehouse glossary topics. WMS.info’s glossary lists the term.

How to interpret an unfamiliar abbreviation

  1. Identify where it appears. A term on an inbound notice, a scanner screen, a shipping document or an inventory label may refer to a different step or object.
  2. Check whether it names an item or a physical unit. A SKU identifies a product; an LPN or handling-unit identifier can track a grouped logistics unit in systems that use it that way.
  3. Separate notice, document and estimate. An ASN is advance delivery information, a BOL is a freight-shipping document, and an ETA is an expected arrival time.
  4. Confirm the local meaning. Check the WMS help text and current SOP before acting on an unfamiliar scanner prompt or document label. Product glossaries describe specific systems, and an employer may configure terms differently.

This is a general English-language reference, not a jurisdiction-specific legal guide. Shipping paperwork, safety procedures and system labels should be interpreted using the applicable local requirements and workplace instructions.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
