The Volkswagen Passat W8 paired the familiar shape of a midsize family car with a 3,999 cc, 275 PS eight-cylinder engine and standard 4Motion all-wheel drive. That made it an unusual flagship—and may make it an intriguing used-car proposition. But “bargain” is not a price verdict: no current, comparable listings or transaction data establish what one should cost today, and a low asking price alone says little about ownership costs.
What made the Passat W8 unusual?
Volkswagen introduced the W8 as the top-of-range Passat in 2001, during the B5 generation, which ran from 1996 until its phase-out in 2005. The 2000 update is also known as B5 GP or 3BG. Rather than styling the car as an obvious sports or luxury model, Volkswagen placed a newly developed eight-cylinder engine inside the ordinary-looking Passat saloon and estate. The result was a flagship with understated packaging: a Passat at a glance, but a substantially different engine and drivetrain underneath. Volkswagen’s B5 history dates the generation and W8’s arrival.
Volkswagen described the model as a bridge toward higher-class cars. The period German-market equipment description included items such as bi-xenon headlights, automatic climate control, upscale trim and 17-inch wheels, but equipment varied by market and year; those details should not be assumed for every imported or locally sold car. Volkswagen España’s June 2001 press materials set out the launch positioning and period claims.
Factory specification: what the W8 actually offered
Volkswagen’s technical self-study programme calls the W8 the first Volkswagen car equipped with an eight-cylinder engine. Its compactly packaged 4.0-litre engine was a distinct development, not simply a routine Passat engine option. The factory technical programme and 2001 press materials list these core specifications. These configurations matter when comparing cars: the W8 was not one identical specification with a choice of bodywork. Transmission and body style affected the performance and fuel figures Volkswagen published.
Performance and fuel claims: period figures, not current forecasts
Volkswagen’s 2001 materials claimed a 0–100 km/h time of 6.5 seconds for the manual saloon and 7.8 seconds for the Tiptronic saloon. It listed a maximum speed of 250 km/h, electronically limited. These are manufacturer figures from the period, not independent test results.

The fuel-consumption numbers are Volkswagen’s period combined figures, not a promise of real-world economy for an older car. Actual fuel use and cost depend on the particular car, its condition, use and fuel prices. The technical programme specifies RON 98 and says output is reduced on RON 95, so fuel grade is also relevant when assessing running costs.
Is the Passat W8 a bargain?
It can be called a bargain only as a qualified proposition: the W8 offered an unusually potent, all-wheel-drive flagship specification in a discreet Passat body. That mismatch is part of its appeal. It does not prove that any particular used example is inexpensive to buy or own.

A 2025 retrospective by AUTO ZEITUNG reports a launch price of 79,602 Deutsche Mark in 2001 and estimates total production at about 11,000 cars. The production total is a secondary estimate, not a figure published on Volkswagen’s history page. The same retrospective notes that expensive parts and repairs contributed to the car’s luxury-car running-cost character. Its historical launch price is context, not a present-day valuation.
There is no established current price range here. A responsible value comparison needs examples from the same market and should match year, saloon or Variant body, gearbox, mileage, condition, service history and originality. Local access to parts and technicians also affects the practical cost of ownership. A low asking price, without those checks, is not enough to call a W8 a cheap car.

What to consider before buying one
The available material does not establish an authoritative W8-specific failure list, current parts prices or a repair-cost dataset. General B5 owner complaints should not be treated as proven W8 diagnoses: the W8 has a distinct engine and 4Motion drivetrain, and generic advice or parts information for four-cylinder Passats may not apply.
- Compare like with like: record the market specification, body style, transmission, mileage, condition and originality for each candidate.
- Ask for service documentation, with attention to the car’s W8 engine and 4Motion system rather than relying on a generic Passat history.
- Arrange a condition-based inspection with a mechanic familiar with Volkswagen’s W8 and 4Motion systems. A cold-start assessment and road test are sensible parts of evaluating a specific car; they are buying checks, not evidence of any universal fault.
- Before committing, consider whether specialist service and parts support is accessible where you live. The factory’s technical programme confirms that this is a distinct drivetrain package, but does not establish present-day repair costs.
A 2025 retrospective cites approximately 800 examples registered in Germany at the start of 2017, attributing that snapshot to the KBA. That is a dated historical registration count, not a current survivor tally or a guide to availability in other countries. AUTO ZEITUNG’s retrospective supplies the estimate and its context.
