Run crypto product research as a cycle: define a product decision, choose a method that can answer the open question, recruit people who reflect the intended audience, observe real tasks safely, and turn the findings into changes you can retest. Give particular attention to wallet setup, signing and approvals, network state, transaction feedback, and privacy. A legitimate study never needs a participant’s seed phrase, password, remote device access, or real funds.
Start with a decision, not a general request for feedback
Before recruiting, write down what the team needs to decide, what remains uncertain, and what evidence could change the decision. A useful question is tied to a specific workflow: for example, whether a first-time user understands wallet setup, can identify the active network, knows what a transaction prompt authorizes, or can recover after a delayed or failed transaction. “Find out what users think” is too broad to guide a study.
Choose the research method to match that uncertainty. Interviews reveal context and reasoning; task-based usability sessions show what people do with an interface; surveys help answer a clearly framed question across a broader group. Product metrics and aggregate blockchain activity can add context, but neither necessarily explains why a person acted. The Bitcoin Design Guide’s user-research guidance and Kraken’s participant guidance offer practical context.
Choose the method that fits the evidence you need
| Method | Best for | What it can show | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interview | Understanding context, motivations, mental models, and past behavior | How someone describes a recent experience, what they expected, and why they made a choice | What people say does not by itself establish how they will behave in a live workflow. |
| Task-based usability session | Finding confusion or breakdowns in a prototype or product flow | Where someone hesitates, takes an unintended path, or misunderstands an interface | A test environment may not reproduce every risk or condition of a real transaction. |
| Survey | Collecting structured responses to a focused question from a broader group | How responses to defined questions vary across respondents | A survey is harder to interpret when the question or relevant concepts are not yet clear. |
| Product or network analytics | Tracking aggregate usage patterns or workflow outcomes | Patterns such as completion, abandonment, errors, or certain on-chain activity | Pseudonymous activity does not, by itself, identify a person or explain intent. |
No single method establishes users’ motivations, usability needs, and safety concerns at once. Pair methods when the decision warrants it: for instance, use interviews to understand how people think about a wallet approval, then observe whether a prototype communicates the approval clearly.

Recruit for the product’s audience and tasks
“Crypto users” is not a sufficiently precise recruiting profile. Define who is likely to use the product and which distinctions matter to the task, such as newcomers versus experienced participants, familiarity with your product, use case, geography, or accessibility needs. Recruit based on the decision you need to make rather than assuming one group represents everyone.
Online communities and public discussions can help surface language, concerns, and potential participants, but community members may not represent the full audience. Public wallet activity is not a reliable way to infer who is behind an address or why they acted. The Ethereum.org design and UX resources and Bitcoin Design Guide discuss the varied audiences and use cases relevant to web3 and digital-currency products.
A 2024 CHI study on cryptocurrency wallet choice and security provides one domain-specific example: its interview protocol addressed wallet choices and reasons, security perceptions, and protective practices, and researchers obtained informed consent before interviews and recording. Treat it as an example of aligning a protocol with research questions, not as a universal recruiting formula.

Prepare interviews and usability sessions
Ask about recent behavior
Use neutral prompts that invite a participant to describe a concrete event: what they were trying to do, what they expected, what they were unsure about, and what happened next. Avoid presuming that terms such as “gas,” “sign,” “bridge,” or “approval” mean the same thing to everyone. Ask participants to explain what they understand in their own words rather than testing their vocabulary.

Observe without coaching
Give usability participants a realistic task and let them work through it while you observe. Do not steer them toward the intended route; their interpretation of the interface is the evidence. Kraken’s guidance frames the session as testing the web page rather than the participant’s ability, a useful way to reduce pressure and make design problems easier to see.
Use a flexible guide and clarify roles
Prepare an interview or task guide that covers the research questions without making the conversation a rigid script. Before the session, confirm consent, whether recording is optional or planned, how information will be handled, and any incentive terms. Keep research separate from customer support or financial advice: a research session is for learning about an experience, not providing personalized guidance on using crypto or a product.

Test the crypto-specific parts of the experience
Include the high-consequence interactions that a generic app checklist can miss. Test with a prototype, screenshots, or a safe demonstration environment when reproducing the real action would create risk.
- Wallet and onboarding: Can participants explain what they are setting up and what responsibilities they are taking on?
- Signing and approvals: Can they tell what action they are authorizing and which asset, permission, or account it concerns?
- Network state: Can they identify the network they are using and understand what to do if it is unsupported or incorrect?
- Transaction feedback: Can they distinguish a pending, completed, or failed transaction and understand what to do next?
- Language and information hierarchy: Can they find and understand the most important information without already having a technical mental model?
- Trust and security communication: Are risks and safety features clear, and do trust cues reflect actual product properties?
Ethereum.org’s “7 heuristics for Web3 interface design” highlights feedback after actions, security and trust, understandable terms, visible network connections, and user control. These are useful prompts for testing; they do not prove that a particular interface is secure or usable.
Protect participants and their data
Make the session safe
Tell participants plainly that researchers will never ask for a seed phrase, account password, login details, remote-control access, or their money. Do not ask someone to transact with real funds to make a task seem realistic. Prefer a non-production prototype, test network, dummy account, or researcher-controlled demonstration. If a real-world risk cannot be reproduced safely, test understanding with screenshots, a prototype, or a walkthrough instead. Kraken’s participant guidance explicitly rules out requests for credentials, seed phrases, and remote access.

Minimize and explain data collection
Collect only what the research question requires. Where practical, keep contact details separate from notes, limit access to recordings, and set a retention and deletion process. Explain who can access the information, how it will be used, whether the session is recorded, and any limits to confidentiality before the participant agrees. The Bitcoin Design Guide emphasizes upfront disclosure, respect for privacy, and transparency about how results are used.
Keep research records off-chain
Treat wallet addresses, transaction details, IP addresses, and information linked to them as potentially sensitive. The European Data Protection Board’s Guidelines 02/2025 explain that blockchain interactions can expose identifiers and transaction payloads, and that wallet or dApp activity may involve personal data. The EDPB says personal data generally should not be included in transaction content and notes the technical difficulty of rectification or erasure once personal data is recorded on-chain. This is EU data-protection guidance, not a complete statement of requirements in every jurisdiction; assess the rules applicable to your study. Do not use a public ledger as a research database.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Analyze findings without overstating them
Keep observations, interpretations, and recommendations distinct. Record what a participant did or said, what they appeared to expect or misunderstand, and the context of the task. Then note your interpretation and how confident you are in it. Look for patterns across relevant participant types and tasks rather than treating one person’s response as a universal truth.

Completion, abandonment, error, and time measures can help track a workflow, but interpret them alongside participants’ explanations and the conditions under which the task was tested. On-chain activity can contribute aggregate behavioral context; pseudonymous addresses alone do not establish a participant’s identity or intent. Visibility also depends on the layer and system involved: base-layer records and payment-channel activity do not expose identical information. Avoid joining wallet histories to research notes unless there is a clear, disclosed, privacy-reviewed need, as discussed in the Bitcoin Design Guide and the EDPB guidance.
Turn findings into product changes and retest
Prioritize findings by the user problem, its impact on the task, the risk of harm or loss, and how many relevant participants encountered it. For each priority, write down the product decision or testable design change it implies. Retest important changes with people who reflect the intended audience, especially when the change affects signing, permissions, network selection, transaction status, or recovery.
Research can become stale as products, protocols, regulation, and audiences change. The Bitcoin Design Guide notes that research may lose relevance as the technology and audience develop, so treat findings as evidence for a decision at a particular point in time—not as a permanent description of every crypto user.
