The Seattle Seahawks sale has cleared its biggest public hurdle: NFL owners unanimously approved the agreement on Aug. 26, 2026. Paul G. Allen’s estate agreed in July to sell the team to a group led by the Khosla family, with Vinod Khosla set to become controlling owner. The price was reported as $9.612 billion, though the estate said the agreement’s terms were not disclosed. What happened to the Seahawks sale?
The estate announced on Feb. 18, 2026, that it had begun a formal process to sell the team—less than two weeks after Seattle beat the New England Patriots 29–13 in Super Bowl LX, its second Super Bowl victory. The estate said the sale followed Paul Allen’s directive to eventually sell his sports holdings and direct all estate proceeds to philanthropy. It selected Allen & Company and Latham & Watkins to lead the process. The estate’s initial announcement described the process; it was not itself a completed sale.
Who is buying the Seattle Seahawks?
On July 11, the Seahawks announced that the estate had reached a formal agreement with an ownership group led by the Khosla family. Vinod Khosla was identified as the incoming controlling owner. Khosla said, “We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks.” The team’s agreement announcement said the terms were not disclosed and that the deal remained subject to NFL approval.
The Associated Press reported that the Khosla family would relinquish its minority stake in the San Francisco 49ers as part of the agreement. The AP’s sale coverage provides that ownership context.

How much did the Seahawks sell for?
NFL.com reported a price of $9.612 billion, attributing the figure to ESPN. That is a reported price, not a figure disclosed by the estate: the Seahawks’ July announcement explicitly said terms were not disclosed. The distinction matters when describing the deal—the amount is widely reportable, but it should not be presented as an estate-confirmed term. Has the sale closed?
NFL owners unanimously approved the agreement on Aug. 26, 2026. Approval is a significant milestone, but the sources establish the vote, not a definitive closing date or completed transfer. Accordingly, the most precise description is that the sale was approved by the league; do not treat the ownership transfer as complete without confirmation of closing.

Why did the estate put the team up for sale after the Super Bowl?
The timing followed Seattle’s championship, but the estate’s stated reason was Paul Allen’s directive concerning his sports holdings and philanthropy—not the Super Bowl result. Allen bought the Seahawks in 1997 for $194 million, according to the Associated Press. His estate said that proceeds from its holdings were to go to philanthropic purposes. The chronology made the February announcement especially notable, but does not establish that winning the title prompted the decision.

The Associated Press reported that the Seahawks’ Lumen Field lease runs through 2032, with three 10-year options. That lease horizon provides context, but it is not a guarantee that the team will remain at the stadium indefinitely or that every future stadium decision is settled.

At the Aug. 26 announcement, Khosla called Lumen Field “iconic and very much a part of the Seahawks’ brand.” He also said the family was not yet owners and needed to learn more before working with team management and the Seattle community. Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had confidence the family would be caretakers of the team and its community partnership.
