Explain each request when it appears, make verification and wallet states clear, and show what a transaction will do before the user approves it. The exact checks and sequence depend on the product, its risks, and the jurisdictions it serves.
Why does crypto onboarding feel difficult?
A first transaction can ask a newcomer to make several unfamiliar decisions in a row: provide identity information, understand who controls the wallet, secure access, choose an asset and amount, review a destination, and approve a transaction. If the interface does not explain why a step matters or what happens next, users have to infer the consequences while handling money.
Design the experience around the user’s task, not the product’s internal teams. Account creation, identity checks where applicable, wallet setup, funding, transaction review, submission, and completion should feel like connected stages. Give users useful explanations at the point of action instead of separating all education from the transaction. Stripe recommends transparent steps, visible progress, clear status feedback, and regional localization in its crypto onboarding guidance.
What should the path from signup to a first transaction include?
The sequence below is a planning model, not a universal legal checklist. Some products will need different steps, or need to place them in a different order. Make each stage’s purpose and next action apparent.

| Stage | What the user needs to know | What the interface should make clear |
|---|---|---|
| Account creation | What information is needed and why | Required fields, progress, and what the account enables |
| Identity verification, where applicable | Why a check is being requested and what capabilities depend on it | Whether verification is needed, submitted, pending, approved, or requires action |
| Wallet setup | Whether the service or the user controls the keys, and what needs protection | The custody model, security responsibilities, and any recovery choices |
| Funding and transaction setup | Which asset, amount, and recipient or destination are involved | Available actions, relevant costs, and the details the user needs to check |
| Review and approval | What the transaction is expected to do | Readable transaction effects, costs, and material uncertainty before approval |
| Submission and completion | Whether the transaction has merely been sent or is complete | A distinct status, any delay or failure, and a safe next action |
How should the flow explain identity checks?
Set expectations before asking for sensitive information
Before a user starts a check, explain what information the service needs, why it is asking, and what capability or limit may depend on the result. State what the user can do while a check is pending. Use plain language rather than making the user guess whether a request is optional, a technical error, or a compliance step.
Match verification to the product and jurisdiction
Decide which checks apply based on the service’s activities, intended user capabilities, transaction limits, risk controls, and jurisdictions. Requirements are not identical across crypto products or places, and an interface should not suggest that users can skip a check when the service or applicable rules require it. Stripe recommends aligning verification depth with intended activity or limits; that is a design recommendation, not a statement of what the law requires in every case.
Make outcomes actionable
Show whether verification is still needed, submitted, pending, approved, or blocked, and provide a useful next step for each state. For example, if the user needs to provide more information, say what is missing and how to continue; if a review is pending, say what actions remain available rather than leaving the user at a generic spinner. Coinbase’s Customers API documentation describes capability requirements with states such as active, pending, and still needed, illustrating one way a service can expose status: Customers API overview.

How should the wallet and custody model be introduced?
Explain custody at the moment it affects the user’s choices. A custodial service controls the keys on the user’s behalf; a self-custodial wallet puts key control and related responsibilities with the user. Be explicit about what the user must secure, what can be recovered, and what the next approval authorizes. Avoid introducing technical terms without explaining the practical consequence.

| Choice | What the design must explain | Key product trade-off to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted or custodial journey | Who controls keys, what the service secures, and how account access or recovery works | How much control and recovery responsibility stays with the service versus the user |
| Self-custodial wallet | What the user must protect, how recovery works, and what approvals mean | How to preserve user control while making security and transaction effects understandable |
| Embedded or abstracted wallet | How custody and recovery work behind a simpler interface, and when the user is authorizing an action | How to reduce setup complexity without obscuring control, recovery, or transaction approval |

What should users see before they approve a transaction?
Present the details that let a person check the action before they sign or submit it: asset, amount, recipient or destination, fees or estimated costs, and any material uncertainty the interface can explain. Use labels a first-time user can understand. If a fee is an estimate or a destination cannot be verified, make that qualification visible rather than implying certainty.
For blockchain transactions, a wallet may receive data that is difficult for a person to interpret. The Ethereum Foundation identifies blind signing as a security UX problem and describes decoding transaction data into human-readable effects and simulating outcomes as possible ways to improve transparency. Use those features only when the underlying data and simulation are reliable; a readable explanation is not a guarantee that a transaction is safe or will execute exactly as expected. How should submission and completion states work?
Do not label a transaction complete just because the user pressed a button or the product submitted it. Distinguish a submitted transaction from one confirmed or otherwise completed under the product’s process. For a pending, delayed, or failed transaction, explain the current state and what the user can safely do next. Avoid a universal promise about how long completion takes: confirmation behavior and status meanings depend on the network and service, and the reviewed sources do not establish one universal timing or status taxonomy.

How should teams choose identity or wallet infrastructure?
Assess infrastructure against the product’s actual operating needs, not just the promise of a shorter signup. For identity design, compare verification depth, jurisdictional coverage, which capabilities depend on approval, expected user actions, and the handling of pending or failed checks. For partner services, also check access eligibility and operational ownership: who handles screening, monitoring, customer support, and decisions when a check cannot be completed.
Coinbase’s Customers API is a specific B2B example, not a general end-user recommendation. Its documentation says live access is limited to onboarded select partners and that KYC currently supports US individuals. Those limits matter when deciding whether it can serve a particular product and audience: Customers API overview.
What compliance boundaries should product teams keep in view?
Legal obligations depend on the activity, product structure, and jurisdiction. As one narrowly scoped example, on April 13, 2026, the SEC Division of Trading and Markets issued a staff statement about broker-dealer registration under Exchange Act Section 15(a) for certain interfaces that prepare transactions in crypto asset securities through self-custodial wallets. It discusses conditions including user customization and education, routing presentation, objective parameters, compensation, and prominent disclosures. The statement is interim and concerns those described activities; it is not general clearance for crypto apps or services. It says that, absent intervening action, it will be considered withdrawn five years from April 13, 2026. Have qualified counsel assess the particular product and jurisdiction. How can a team tell whether onboarding is working?
Instrument the path so the team can identify where users are progressing, waiting, failing, or leaving. Track account creation, verification submission and outcomes, wallet setup, funding, transaction review, submission, and completion. Combine funnel data with qualitative feedback so a lower screen count does not conceal confusion or risk.
- Look for stage-specific drop-off and failure patterns, not only an overall signup or completion figure.
- Test explanations, status feedback, and step ordering with the product’s own users and jurisdictions.
- Review first-transaction completion alongside fraud, support burden, and whether users understand what they approved.
Incognia’s February 8, 2022 company announcement said its study reviewed 19 crypto exchange and wallet apps and reported an average onboarding time of 1 minute and 53 seconds and 11 screens on average. These are dated findings summarized by the company, not a current market average or a target for completing a transaction: Incognia crypto onboarding report announcement. The sources cited here do not establish a current, independently verified universal first-transaction completion rate or a quantified causal lift from any single design change.
