Crypto users can drop out at account creation, identity verification, wallet setup, funding, or their first transaction. There is no single proven cause or universal abandonment rate: the useful fix is to find where people stop, explain what is required, and remove unnecessary effort without weakening legal or security controls.
Where crypto onboarding can lose users
Onboarding is a sequence, not a single sign-up form. A person may understand how to create an account but hesitate when asked for identity documents, a wallet, payment details, or unfamiliar recovery information. Track each step separately so that a slow verification queue is not mistaken for a wallet-setup problem.
Account creation
Too many fields before a user understands the service can make the first step feel burdensome. Stripe recommends keeping the initial entry simple while recognizing that risk controls may require information. Ask for a field when it is needed, and explain its purpose.
Identity verification
Document capture, unclear requirements, failed attempts, and waiting can interrupt the journey. Users may ask, “Why do I have to verify my identity to buy crypto?” Explain which activity triggers a check, what documents are accepted, what happens next, and how to get help. Verification obligations vary by jurisdiction and product; do not move or remove a check without confirming applicable legal and risk requirements.

Wallet setup and recovery
A user who is new to crypto may not know what a wallet does, who controls it, or how to recover access. If the product asks someone to install a separate wallet or manage recovery material, explain those responsibilities before the decision rather than assuming the concepts are familiar.
Funding and first use
Payment access and the first transaction are distinct stages. A user can complete sign-up yet fail to reach value because funding options, fees, transaction steps, or next actions are unclear. Measure the path through the first successful transaction, not only account creation.

Why identity checks take time—and how to explain them
Verification can require document review or additional checks, and some applications may take longer when information is incomplete or needs manual review. The sources available do not establish a current universal verification time or a single leading cause of delay across crypto apps. Tell users what to expect for the particular check, how to identify a problem, and what recovery path is available.
In UK financial-promotion guidance, the FCA recommends explaining cooling-off periods early and making choices clear and neutral. It also says: “Good practice would be to clearly explain fees that could impact the decision of whether to proceed at the end of the cooling-off period.” That guidance applies in its specific UK context; it is not a general rule that every crypto app must use a cooling-off period.

Choose verification timing around obligations and risk
Some services verify at registration; others may trigger checks when a person attempts a regulated or higher-risk action. Stripe describes both front-loaded and activity-triggered approaches as design options, not blanket permission to defer checks. The right sequence depends on jurisdiction, product model, fraud and financial-crime exposure, and the information needed to make a sound decision.
| Decision factor | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Legal requirements | Which checks must occur, and before which activities, in each jurisdiction where the service operates. |
| Risk | Fraud and financial-crime exposure, verification quality, and the consequences of allowing activity before checks are complete. |
| User journey | Completion, elapsed time, comprehension, and time to first value. |
| Operational impact | Manual-review burden, support volume, and the likelihood of retries or unresolved failures. |
| Privacy | What sensitive information is collected, when it is collected, and how much exposure the flow creates. |
Compare these outcomes together rather than optimizing sign-up completion alone. A faster flow is not an improvement if it materially degrades verification, increases fraud, or leaves users confused about what they agreed to.

Make wallet choices understandable
When a wallet is needed, explain custody in plain language: who controls access, what the user must protect, and what recovery involves. Compare hosted, embedded, and passkey-based approaches by setup steps, recovery, custody, supported devices, platform dependence, and security model. No single wallet approach fits every product or threat model.
Exodus’s SEC filing describes an embedded passkey wallet flow that avoids separate installation and a written seed phrase in that described flow. This is a company-reported product design, not independent evidence that it improves conversion or is safer than alternatives. Test any approach against the product’s security requirements and the user’s ability to recover access.

How to find and reduce avoidable friction
- Map the full journey. Record each step from app install or landing page through the first successful transaction, including account creation, identity checks, wallet setup, funding, and first use.
- Measure each step. Track completion, elapsed time, retries, failure reasons, support contacts, and abandonment by stage. The FCA recommends collecting real-time onboarding-friction data and using it for continuing improvement.
- Collect only what is needed at that point. Review each field and verification gate against legal obligations and risk requirements before simplifying or delaying it.
- Explain sensitive requests and waits. Say why information or documents are required, how long the specific check is expected to take, what a failure means, and how to recover or contact support.
- Make document capture recoverable. State acceptable documents and give clear camera guidance. Preserve progress where possible, and provide actionable next steps after a failed attempt instead of forcing users to guess.
- Introduce wallet concepts when they matter. Explain custody and recovery before asking users to choose or secure a wallet. Test embedded or passkey approaches only where they fit the product and threat model.
- Evaluate the whole outcome. Compare completion and time to first value with fraud, account takeover, verification quality, support load, and user comprehension.
These are practical design measures, not interventions with independently quantified effects in the sources cited here. Treat changes as hypotheses to test rather than guaranteed conversion improvements.
What published figures do—and do not—show
Incognia’s 2022 announcement reported an average onboarding time of 1 minute 53 seconds, 11 screens, and seven fields across its review of 14 exchange apps and five wallet apps. Those figures describe that historical sample, not the current market or an expected time for every user. Incognia is an identity technology provider, so its announcement should be read as a vendor’s report.
The FCA’s 2025 survey found that 73% of UK cryptoasset users used a centralized exchange to obtain cryptoassets, four percentage points more than in 2024. That describes a channel respondents used; it is not a sign-up abandonment rate. The survey used an online YouGov panel, with 2,353 people interviewed in phase one and an additional boost of 1,053 people who own or previously owned cryptoassets in phase two. The sample and fieldwork matter when applying the result beyond the survey.
Sumsub, an identity provider, describes repeated KYC across exchanges and on-ramps as a friction and privacy issue. Its account is a provider’s perspective, not a measure of how often repetition causes abandonment. More broadly, no current independent cross-platform abandonment rate or causal ranking of onboarding fixes is established by these sources. Avoid treating an old app review or a vendor’s general claim as a current universal benchmark.
