Those talks did not produce a deal. Google and Wiz later signed a $32 billion agreement in March 2025, and Alphabet completed the acquisition on March 11, 2026, reporting a $29.5 billion purchase amount after specified adjustments.
What happened to Google’s reported $23 billion Wiz deal?
In July 2024, The Wall Street Journal reported that Alphabet, Google’s parent company, was in advanced discussions to acquire Wiz for about $23 billion. That was a report about negotiations, not a signed agreement. The talks failed to result in a transaction. The WSJ later recapped the reported talks, while TechCrunch described them as failed and reported revived discussions in March 2025.
How the reported price became $32 billion and then $29.5 billion
The figures refer to different stages and accounting bases; they are not three competing statements of one final price.
| When and status | Reported or recorded amount | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| July 2024: reported negotiations | About $23 billion | An approximate value reported for advanced discussions; no agreement had been signed. The Wall Street Journal’s September 19, 2024 page later recapped the talks. |
| March 18, 2025: definitive agreement announced | $32 billion | Google announced an all-cash agreement, subject to closing adjustments and customary conditions, including regulatory approvals. Google’s announcement described the agreement value. |
| March 11, 2026: acquisition completed | $29.5 billion | Alphabet’s SEC filing reported the purchase amount after purchase price adjustments and excluding post-combination compensation arrangements. Alphabet’s filing says Wiz’s financial results are included in Google Cloud. |
In other words, the $23 billion number belongs to an earlier, unsuccessful negotiation. The $32 billion number was the announced value of the later agreement before closing adjustments; $29.5 billion is the amount Alphabet subsequently reported on the filing’s specified basis.

What Wiz does
Wiz makes cloud-security software. Google described its platform as connecting to major cloud services and code environments to help prevent cybersecurity incidents. That makes the acquisition a business-software and infrastructure deal, not a purchase of a consumer security product.
Google said it intended to use the acquisition to accelerate cloud security and multicloud capabilities. In the company’s March 18, 2025 announcement, CEO Sundar Pichai said: “Together, Google Cloud and Wiz will turbocharge improved cloud security and the ability to use multiple clouds.” This is Google’s stated rationale, not an independently established assessment of the deal’s eventual results.
Will Wiz still work with AWS and Azure?
Google said Wiz products would continue to work across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud after the acquisition. It also said Google Cloud customers would continue to have access to a range of partner security solutions through Google Cloud Marketplace. Those statements describe Google’s announced product direction; they do not establish how every product or integration will perform over time. Google’s deal announcement sets out those commitments.

The financial figures often mentioned alongside the acquisition are historical, not a current revenue update. The Wall Street Journal reported that Wiz reached $100 million in annual recurring revenue 18 months after its 2020 launch and had $500 million in annual recurring revenue at the time of its 2024 report. Those are WSJ-reported snapshots from 2024, not present-day figures. The WSJ’s September 19, 2024 report covered those figures.
