Why did David Bowie leave $2 million to his assistant? His will reportedly left that amount to longtime personal assistant Corinne Schwab, along with shares in a company Bowie owned. But the reporting on the will does not establish Bowie’s personal reason for choosing Schwab or why he settled on exactly $2 million.

What Bowie’s will reportedly left Schwab

An Associated Press report published by CBS News said Bowie’s will left Corinne Schwab, also known as Coco, a $2 million cash bequest and shares he owned in Oppossum Inc. The AP account describes the filed will, rather than reproducing the probate document itself. Read the AP report published by CBS News.

The Washington Post describes Schwab as Bowie’s longtime personal assistant. That professional relationship is useful context for understanding why she appears among the will’s named beneficiaries, but it does not establish a stated motive for the gift. The reviewed reporting contains no first-person explanation from Bowie for either the amount or the decision to leave her company shares. The Washington Post’s account of the will.

How the assistant’s gift fit into the wider estate

The AP report said the will, filed in Manhattan under Bowie’s legal name, David Robert Jones, was prepared in 2004 and put the estate’s approximate value at $100 million. It did not break down the finances behind that estimate. The figure is therefore a reported approximate value, not an audited accounting.

The same account described the principal estate distribution and several specific gifts:

Beneficiary Reported provision
Iman The SoHo home and half of the rest of the estate
Duncan Jones 25 percent of the estate
Alexandria Zahra Jones 25 percent of the estate and the Ulster County home
Corinne Schwab $2 million and shares Bowie owned in Oppossum Inc.
Marion Skene, identified as Alexandria’s nanny $1 million

These descriptions distinguish the main estate shares from specific gifts of money, shares, and property; they should not be read as equivalent types of inheritance. The Guardian also reported the gifts to Schwab and Skene, attributing those details to the New York Daily News. The Guardian’s report.

Does the reported guardian provision explain the amount?

Entertainment Tonight reported that Schwab was named as a potential guardian for Bowie’s daughter if Iman died before the daughter turned 18. That provision adds context about a responsibility Bowie reportedly contemplated, but the available coverage does not say he connected it to Schwab’s $2 million gift. It cannot establish why he chose that exact sum. Entertainment Tonight’s report on the will.

Was Schwab the inspiration for “Never Let Me Down”?

The Washington Post wrote that many people believed Schwab was the subject of Bowie’s song “Never Let Me Down.” That is an attributed belief, not confirmation of the song’s subject. It also does not explain the bequest: the reviewed coverage does not connect the song to Bowie’s decision to leave Schwab money or shares.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

The reported will terms establish that Schwab received a substantial specific gift and company shares, in addition to her reported role as Bowie’s longtime assistant. They do not reveal Bowie’s personal rationale or show how he calculated the cash amount. Any more precise explanation—whether based on their relationship, the guardian provision, or the song—would go beyond what the cited coverage establishes.
