How to Read a Bank’s Earnings Report: Net Profit, NIM, and Bad Loans Explained

Net profit is only the starting point. Learn how to trace a bank’s income and expenses, interpret NIM changes, and distinguish delinquent from nonperforming loans.

A bank’s net profit is the result, not the whole story. To understand what drove it, read net interest income and noninterest income alongside operating expenses and credit-loss provisions; then check net interest margin (NIM) and the report’s precise definitions of delinquent and nonperforming loans. Compare each measure with the bank’s earlier periods and similar institutions, using the same definitions and reporting basis.

Start with net income, then trace what drove it

Net income is the bottom line for the reporting period. If the bank reports earnings per share, that figure can help describe the result for shareholders, but neither number explains where earnings came from. A bank’s revenue includes net interest income and noninterest income; its expenses include operating costs and provision expense for credit losses.

Read those components together. Net income can rise even if net interest income is flat or falling, if another source of income grows enough to offset higher costs. It can also fall because expenses or provisions increased, even if revenue improved. In its summary of 24 large banks, the Federal Reserve reported that first-quarter 2026 net interest income was flat quarter over quarter, while higher noninterest income more than offset increases in operating expenses and credit-loss provisions. The sample is not the entire US banking system. Federal Reserve, Financial Stability Report

Do not call earnings “core,” “recurring,” or “one-time adjusted” without checking the bank’s explanation and reconciliation. Those descriptions depend on the specific items and the company’s stated calculation. For a named bank, consult its current earnings release, income statement, and regulatory filing.

Use profitability ratios as comparisons, not standalone verdicts

Return on average assets (ROAA) is net income divided by average assets; return on equity (ROE) is net income divided by average equity capital. Because these ratios use different bases, and can be affected by a bank’s balance sheet and business mix, compare the same measure across periods and suitable peers. The Federal Reserve reported aggregate US commercial-bank ROAA of about 1.1% and ROE of 11.2% at year-end 2025; these are dated system-wide context, not targets or assessments of an individual bank. Federal Reserve, Financial Stability Report

What NIM measures—and why it moves

Net interest margin (NIM) is net interest income divided by average earning assets. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) uses a tax-equivalent interest-income basis in its examiner formula. Banks may disclose a calculation with specific adjustments, so use the company’s stated method when interpreting its reported NIM. OCC, Comptroller’s Handbook: Earnings Federal Reserve, Financial Stability Report

A higher margin is not automatically good, and a lower one is not automatically bad. To explain a change, examine three drivers:

  • Rates: Compare yields on loans and investments with costs for deposits and other funding. Rising rates may lift asset yields, but deposit rates and borrowing costs can rise too.
  • Volume: Changes in average earning assets and interest-bearing liabilities affect interest income and expense, even if yields and funding costs are steady.
  • Mix: A shift among loan types, investments, noninterest-bearing deposits, time deposits, and borrowings can change the margin.

When NIM changes, check the bank’s discussion of asset yields, deposit and borrowing costs, balance growth or contraction, and shifts in its asset and funding mix. Compare with the prior period and peer disclosures on a consistent basis. The OCC treats significant variances from prior periods or peer banks as matters for further investigation, not proof of a problem. Read loan trouble using the report’s exact definition

“Bad loans” is an informal phrase, not one precise statistical category. In the Federal Reserve’s definitions, nonperforming loans are loans 90 or more days past due plus loans in nonaccrual status. Its separate delinquency series counts loans 30 or more days past due or in nonaccrual status. Because the delinquency measure includes loans at an earlier stage of past due status, it is not interchangeable with the nonperforming-loan measure. Always identify which definition a report uses. Separate provision expense from the allowance

A provision for credit losses is an expense charged against earnings for the period. The allowance for loan and lease losses (ALLL) is a balance-sheet valuation reserve: an estimate of amounts expected to be uncollectible that reduces the reported book value of loans and leases to the amount expected to be collected. They are related, but not synonyms. Federal Reserve, Financial Accounts Guide

The reserve coverage ratio is ALLL divided by nonperforming loans. A higher ratio means more allowance relative to the measured nonperforming loans, but that ratio alone does not establish whether reserves are sufficient. Loan mix, collateral, expected losses, accounting assumptions, and the definitions used all matter. Federal Reserve, Financial Accounts Guide

Put US industry figures in context

System-wide figures can help orient a reader, but they are not health thresholds for a particular institution. The Federal Reserve reported that US commercial-bank loan balances were 5.6% higher at year-end 2025 than a year earlier. Its delinquency series—loans 30 or more days past due or in nonaccrual status—stood at 1.6% at year-end, slightly above earlier in 2025 and below the long-run historical average of about 3%. The figures describe aggregate US commercial banks, not an individual bank or a different country’s reporting system. Federal Reserve, Financial Stability Report

For the first quarter of 2026, the Federal Reserve reported aggregate ROE of 14% for its sample of 24 large banks, up from 12% in the fourth quarter of 2025. In that sample, stronger noninterest income more than offset higher expenses and provisions while net interest income was flat quarter over quarter. The sample’s aggregate common equity tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio was 12% at the end of the first quarter; CET1 is a capital measure, not an earnings measure. Federal Reserve, Financial Stability Report

The OCC said in its May 7, 2026 release that “Bank earnings improved in 2025, supported by loan growth and a decline in funding costs.” It also highlighted refinancing risk in some commercial real estate and private credit segments, and modest increases in past-due loans in some consumer portfolios. These are regulator observations about US banking conditions, not conclusions about a particular bank. OCC, May 7, 2026 news release

Make comparisons that can support a conclusion

  • Across time: Compare the same bank and reporting basis quarter over quarter and year over year where available. Check for seasonality, acquisitions, unusual items, or changes in definitions.
  • Across banks: Prefer institutions with similar size and business mix. A card-focused lender, custody bank, regional lender, and diversified money-center bank may have different earnings drivers.
  • For earnings quality: Track the relative contributions of net interest income and noninterest income, alongside operating costs and provision expense. Check management’s explanations against the reported line items.
  • For asset quality: Keep past-due, nonaccrual, nonperforming-loan, provision, allowance, and reserve-coverage measures distinct, and check the loan categories behind changes.

The OCC lists significant variances from prior periods or peer banks in measures such as ROAA, NIM, efficiency ratio, income and expenses, and yields as potential red flags. It also identifies asset growth that significantly outpaces capital growth and high dividend payouts. These are prompts to investigate the figures and their causes, not automatic diagnoses. OCC, Comptroller’s Handbook: Earnings
