How to Recover Files From a Flash Storage Device That Won’t Read

Cancel format prompts and stop using an unstable flash device. Learn how to assess a stable drive, when recovery software may help, and when to seek professional evaluation.

If the files matter, stop using the flash device now. Unplug it if it is damaged, freezing, or disconnecting; cancel any prompt to format, initialize, or repair it. Those actions can write to or erase the device, and software recovery is not guaranteed to work. A device that is detected consistently may have a connection, mounting, partition, or file-system problem, but symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.

First, protect the files

  • Cancel format, initialize, and repair prompts. A prompt to format a disk is not a safe next step when you still want its contents. SanDisk warns that erase and low-level format operations are destructive; its support article says, “The process is Data Destructive and cannot be undone!” Read SanDisk’s warning.
  • Stop repeated attempts if the device is unstable. Unplug a physically damaged device, or one that freezes or repeatedly disconnects. Continued use and writes may complicate recovery.
  • Do not save recovered files back to the problem device. If recovery software is appropriate, choose another storage location for any recovered files.

A connection sound or an entry in a computer’s interface only shows that some part of the device or connection was detected; it does not prove the stored memory is readable.

What “won’t read” can mean

Labels such as “USB device not recognized,” “not detected,” “RAW,” “Local Disk,” or a request to format describe symptoms, not a diagnosis. An intact, stable device may have a host or connection issue, may fail to mount, or may have a partition or file-system problem. A controller, connector, or flash-memory fault is also possible. The same symptom can have different causes, so do not assume software can fix it.

Make only cautious checks on a stable device

If the device looks physically intact and does not freeze or disconnect, a small number of checks may help distinguish a computer-side issue from a device-side one. Stop if the behavior becomes unstable.

  1. Check the computer’s storage-management interface. See whether the device appears there, and note what it reports. Do not accept prompts to format, initialize, or repair it, and do not change partitions or run erase/reset operations while the files matter.
  2. If safe, try another port or computer once. If the same problem follows the device, that still does not prove a specific hardware fault. Do not keep cycling connections, especially if the device is damaged or unstable.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s guidance for the device and operating system. SanDisk offers platform-specific troubleshooting; follow only steps that do not write to, reset, or erase the source when you need its files.

Choose between software recovery and professional evaluation

For a stable, physically intact device, recovery software may be an option. It can recover some files while leaving others lost; Kingston explicitly cautions that software recovery may not restore everything. It cannot be relied on to resolve a failed connector, controller, or flash memory. If files are irreplaceable, or the device has physical damage, freezes, disconnects, or reports implausible capacity, stop experimenting and seek a qualified professional evaluation.

Decision factor Software recovery may be reasonable Prefer professional evaluation
Stability and capacity The device remains consistently detected and reports plausible capacity. It freezes, repeatedly disconnects, or reports implausible capacity.
Physical condition No visible damage or signs of instability. Physical damage or erratic behavior is present.
Importance of files Files are replaceable or backed up, and you accept that recovery may be incomplete. Files are unique or irreplaceable and further attempts could reduce recovery options.
Proposed action The process reads the source and saves recovered files somewhere else. The process writes to, formats, repairs, or resets the source before recovery.

These are practical decision criteria, not a validated diagnostic test. If you contact a recovery provider, evaluate its terms, privacy practices, and service conditions independently. SanDisk says it does not perform recovery itself, refers customers to partners, and disclaims responsibility for those partners’ services.

Keep recovery separate from repair or reuse

Some manufacturer utilities are designed to restore a flash drive to working or factory-default condition, not to retrieve its files. Transcend describes JetFlash Online Recovery as restoring the drive to factory-default settings and advises backing up data first. Do not run reset, erase, or low-level format utilities while the data is still wanted. Consider repair or reuse only after the files have been recovered or you have decided they can be lost.
