OpenAI and Anthropic both sell AI through consumer subscriptions, business products and developer platforms, but they emphasize different routes to growth. OpenAI explicitly describes a mix of subscriptions, advertising and commerce on a free tier, and usage-based API sales. Anthropic’s public growth story puts more weight on enterprise and developer adoption, including Claude Code. Their reported revenue figures use different measures and are not a reliable head-to-head scorecard. For an individual or business choosing between them, the useful comparison is the product that fits the work, its real cost at expected usage, and the controls and deployment options required.
What each company sells
Neither company is just a chatbot subscription. Each has consumer-facing products, tools for organizations and an API that developers can use to build AI into other software. The products overlap, but the way customers access them—and the features and billing involved—depends on the product and plan.
| Product layer | OpenAI | Anthropic |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer products | ChatGPT, with free access and paid subscriptions. OpenAI’s business-model statement describes a free tier supported by advertising and commerce, alongside paid consumer subscriptions. | Business and workplace products | ChatGPT business subscriptions and enterprise offerings, with administrative and security controls described by OpenAI. The exact features depend on the product and agreement. OpenAI’s API and platform overview | Claude for Work and Enterprise, with Claude Chat, Claude Code and Cowork included in Anthropic’s Enterprise description. Anthropic says Enterprise prompts, data and results are not used to train its models by default. Claude Enterprise |
| Developer access | Usage-billed API for building text, image, voice, code and agent workflows. The platform describes the Responses API and Agents SDK, and tools such as web search, file search and remote MCP servers. OpenAI API Platform | Claude Platform/API, as well as Claude Code for coding workflows. Anthropic describes access through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI and Microsoft Azure in addition to its own platform. Claude Enterprise |
These are the companies’ own descriptions of their offerings, not an independent assessment of model quality. Availability and included features can vary by plan, region and deployment route.
How their business models differ
OpenAI: subscriptions, ads and commerce, and API usage
OpenAI says its business began with subscriptions and now combines consumer and team subscriptions, a free tier supported by advertising and commerce, and APIs billed according to usage. Its stated strategy is to invest in computing capacity and model capability, broaden adoption, generate revenue and reinvest. The company summarizes the principle as “our business model should scale with the value intelligence delivers.” OpenAI’s explanation of its business model
#1 Best Overall
This structure means the cost to a customer depends on the route they use: a consumer subscription, a business product, or API calls within an application. API use is not the same as a fixed monthly chatbot subscription; the bill depends on usage and the applicable model and rates.
Anthropic: subscriptions, enterprise adoption and developer use
Anthropic sells Claude plans to individuals and organizations, along with Claude Code and API access. In its Series G announcement, the company framed enterprise and developer adoption as growth drivers: customers may begin with Claude API, Claude Code or Claude for Work, then expand use across an organization. That emphasis does not mean Anthropic has no consumer business or that OpenAI lacks enterprise and developer products. Both companies span these customer groups; the distinction is how each describes its commercial mix and growth.
What the companies have reported about revenue
The companies have released headline figures, but they are not directly comparable. OpenAI reported annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $2 billion in 2023, $6 billion in 2024 and more than $20 billion in 2025. In the same 2026 statement, it reported computing capacity of 0.2 GW, 0.6 GW and approximately 1.9 GW for those respective years. These are OpenAI’s reported figures, not independently audited side-by-side results. OpenAI’s statement

Anthropic’s 2026 funding announcement reported $14 billion in run-rate revenue and said its run-rate revenue had grown more than 10 times annually in each of the previous three years. The company also reported more than 500 customers spending over $1 million annually on an annualized basis, and said eight Fortune 10 companies were Claude customers. For Claude Code, Anthropic reported more than $2.5 billion in run-rate revenue, more than double its level at the beginning of 2026, with enterprise use representing over half of Claude Code revenue. These are company-reported figures. Anthropic’s Series G announcement
ARR and run-rate revenue are not interchangeable with recognized revenue, and the two announcements do not provide a common accounting basis or matching measurement dates for a clean comparison. The Associated Press has also noted that these private companies do not publicly disclose sales. The available figures therefore do not establish which company has higher recognized revenue, better margins or greater profitability. Associated Press coverage of the rivalry and disclosure limits

A consumer subscription, a team seat and API usage have different billing mechanics. Anthropic’s plans page listed the following prices on October 4, 2026; they are a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of current pricing. Anthropic says prices may change, applicable taxes may be extra, and usage limits apply. Check the live plan and contract details before budgeting. Claude plans and pricing
| Anthropic plan or seat | Listed price | Billing qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 per month, or $17 per month with annual billing | Annual-billing rate requires annual billing. |
| Max | Starts at $100 per month | Starting price; the cited pricing page did not establish a comparable OpenAI plan price. |
| Team standard seat | $20 per seat per month with annual billing, or $25 per seat per month with monthly billing | Per-seat pricing; applicable taxes and usage limits may apply. |
| Team premium seat | $100 per seat per month with annual billing, or $125 per seat per month with monthly billing | Per-seat pricing; applicable taxes and usage limits may apply. |
| Enterprise | Seat price plus usage at API rates | Anthropic’s Enterprise help page describes self-serve and sales-assisted plans and billing options; check the terms for the specific plan. Enterprise plan help |
OpenAI’s API uses model- and token-based pricing, which changes over time. A comparable current ChatGPT plan price table was not established in the cited materials, so a dollar-for-dollar subscription comparison would be misleading. Before choosing a plan or setting an API budget, check the vendors’ current rates and terms for the exact product you expect to use.

- For a personal subscription: compare the monthly or annual fee with the tasks you expect to use it for, the plan’s limits and whether you need its included tools.
- For API development: estimate expected input and output volume by model, then account for caching, tool use and any contract or overage terms. A fixed subscription price is not a substitute for that estimate.
- For a team or enterprise: include per-seat charges, usage-based charges, administration, procurement and support terms in the total—not just the headline seat price.
What to evaluate before choosing
For personal-finance purposes, the key is to avoid paying for capacity, seats or features that your actual use does not require. For a business, the same cost question must be considered alongside security, integration and deployment.
- Test your real tasks. Use representative work—such as coding, writing, analysis, multimodal input or agent execution—and judge the results against your requirements. Vendor claims or benchmark headlines alone do not establish which model will work better for your specific tasks.
- Check workflow and integrations. Identify which tools and data sources the service can reach, how an agent can act on them, and how your team will review outputs. A product that fits your existing workflow may be more useful than one with a stronger feature list that does not.
- Model total cost at expected usage. For subscriptions, check limits and billing periods. For API use, consider model choice, input and output volume, caching, tool use, overages and contract terms. Revisit estimates if usage grows.
- Match governance to your requirements. Compare data handling, retention, training defaults, identity and role controls, auditability and the compliance terms you actually need. Confirm details for the specific product and contract instead of assuming controls apply identically across every offering.
- Assess procurement and deployment. Consider direct purchase, API access, cloud marketplace options, regional requirements, support and existing cloud commitments. Which is the better fit?
There is no supported universal winner. A consumer comparing Claude and ChatGPT should start with the tasks they do most, the current plan limits and the recurring fee they are willing to pay. A company selecting a platform should run a task-specific evaluation and compare the integration, governance, deployment and total-cost requirements of the exact plans or APIs under consideration. OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s growth figures show that both report substantial demand, but they do not answer which product or contract is the better value for a particular user.
