Anki and Knowt are the two strongest alternatives to consider if you want to make and share digital study flashcards. Anki offers detailed control over cards and review scheduling; Knowt advertises a more Quizlet-like workflow, including sharing, study modes and importing Quizlet sets. The right fit depends on how you create cards, who needs access, which devices you use and the current plan limits where you live.
Compare the options by the work you need them to do
A flashcard app is only a useful Quizlet alternative if it fits your actual workflow. Before moving a class set or building a personal library, consider how you will create cards, share them, review them and access them across devices.
- Creation: Will you type cards manually, import an existing set or make a draft from notes and course materials? Review AI-generated cards for errors and omissions before relying on them.
- Sharing and migration: Sharing a deck by link is not the same as letting classmates edit it together. Check the permissions you need, and test whether formatting, images and deck organization survive an import.
- Review: Decide whether you want a straightforward practice mode or scheduled repetition that responds to your recall. A scheduling algorithm is a feature, not proof of better learning outcomes.
- Devices and sync: Confirm that the app supports the devices you use and suits your internet and offline needs. Syncing between devices does not necessarily mean you can study offline.
- Cost and limits: Free features, paid tiers and limits can change by plan and region. Check the current official plan details before moving a large library or committing to a tool.
Anki: choose it for control and configurable reviews
Anki is a strong fit if you want to customize your cards and review process rather than use only a fixed set of study modes. Its official site describes cards with audio, images, video and scientific markup, customizable card layouts, and review timing based on your recall rating. Anki also links to shared decks. See Anki’s official site for its current platform and service information.
AnkiWeb provides free synchronization across devices, according to Anki. The desktop version is free for major platforms; the official iOS app is AnkiMobile, and AnkiDroid is free on Android. Check the official site for platform details that apply to your devices.
#1 Best Overall
- Premium Thick Paper: 180gsm weight resists bleed-through and withstands frequent handling
- Key Ring Design: Perfect for attaching to bags, backpacks, or keys - always have your notes handy
- 5 Color Assortment: Choose from 5 vibrant colors (purple, blue, green, pink, white) to suit your style and organizational needs

This flexibility may require more setup than a simple set-and-study tool. Anki’s feature list supports the case for customization, but it does not establish how easy it is to use compared with Quizlet or other alternatives.
Knowt: choose it for a Quizlet-like workflow
Knowt says users can create, share and study flashcards, and advertises Learn, matching, spaced repetition and practice-test modes. It also promotes AI-assisted creation from uploaded materials and says users can bring over Quizlet sets. These are claims on Knowt’s official site, not independent verification of import fidelity or educational effectiveness.

How to choose without disrupting your study routine
- Start with your cards. If you are creating from scratch, test how quickly you can enter a representative sample. If you are working from notes, check whether the tool’s creation options suit your materials and review every generated card.
- Test the handoff. Import a small existing set before moving your full library. Share a test deck with a classmate and confirm whether the access is view-only or allows collaboration.
- Try the review experience. Compare the way each app presents practice and handles repeat reviews. Choose the behavior you are most likely to use consistently; do not treat a particular schedule as a guarantee of learning results.
- Check your devices and plan. Verify app availability, synchronization, offline access and relevant limits for your devices and region on the official service pages.
When paper cards make more sense
Blank index cards can work for offline drafting or review, especially when you want to practice without a device. They do not provide digital syncing or easy link-sharing, so they are a practical alternative for individual study rather than a direct replacement for a shared online deck.
