A Raspberry Pi 5’s board price is only the first line in the budget. To make it usable, you may also need power and boot storage; a desktop setup can add a display connection and input devices, while a server or other project may need cooling, an SSD adapter, or specialized parts. Your actual total depends on the model, what you already own, and what you plan to build—not one universal “true cost.”
How much does a Raspberry Pi cost?
There is no single current global checkout price for a Raspberry Pi 5. Raspberry Pi lists 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB variants, but directs buyers to regional resellers rather than publishing one worldwide price. Check a local quote for the specific memory configuration and record the date, currency, tax, and shipping. Raspberry Pi 5 product page
Board prices can also change over time. On 2 February 2026, Raspberry Pi announced increases for Raspberry Pi 4 and 5, and Compute Module 4 and 5 products with at least 2GB of memory: $10 for 2GB, $15 for 4GB, $30 for 8GB, and $60 for 16GB. These are announced increases, not the current price of a board or a complete setup. Raspberry Pi said the increases reflected rapidly rising LPDDR4 costs; its CEO Eben Upton wrote, “Price rises have accelerated as we enter 2026, and the cost of some parts has more than doubled over the last quarter.” The notice said the 1GB Pi 4 and Pi 5 were protected from the increase at that time. For a useful budget, separate the board quote from the parts needed to use it. Do not treat Raspberry Pi 5 launch-era accessory prices as current retail prices.

What do you need to set up a Raspberry Pi 5?
Start with the essentials you do not already own, then add items required by the particular project. The table is a checklist, not a claim that every build needs every item.
| Budget line | When to include it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Power supply | If you do not have a suitable supply | Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply. Power headroom matters more when attaching power-hungry USB devices. Official Pi 5 specifications and FAQ |
| Boot storage | For a working system, unless you already have compatible storage | The board has a microSD slot. An M.2 SSD is another option, but using one requires a separate HAT or adapter. Official Pi 5 specifications |
| Case or cooling | If you need physical protection, or your environment and workload call for cooling | The official Pi 5 case is a new design and does not fit the Pi 4; it includes a fan. Typical client workloads are designed to run uncased without active cooling, while sustained heavy use is a reason to consider cooling. Official Pi 5 specifications |
| Display connection and input devices | For a desktop-style setup, if you lack compatible equipment | Pi 5 has dual HDMI output. A headless project may need neither a monitor nor a keyboard and mouse. Official Pi 5 specifications |
| Project-specific parts | Only when your build calls for them | HATs, cameras, sensors, mounts, network accessories, or larger storage can add to the budget; an M.2 SSD needs an adapter. |
| Electricity | For a system that runs regularly or continuously | Estimate it from your system’s measured average wall draw, hours of operation, peripherals, and local electricity tariff. There is no universal annual cost. |
How the budget changes by use case
Headless project
A headless device, such as a system managed remotely, may not need a monitor, keyboard, or mouse. Budget for suitable power and boot storage if you cannot reuse them, then add the project-specific hardware. A case or cooling depends on protection needs, surroundings, and workload.

Desktop setup
A desktop build needs a display path and input devices as well as power and boot storage. Include only what you are missing: if you already own a compatible display and keyboard, those are not new expenses. Pi 5 provides dual HDMI output, but the required cable or adapter depends on your display.
SSD-equipped server or other sustained workload
Price the SSD and its HAT or adapter as separate items. Consider cooling for sustained heavy use, rather than assuming every Pi 5 needs active cooling. Include electricity using your own measured usage and tariff if the system will run for long periods.

Will my Raspberry Pi 4 power supply work for Raspberry Pi 5?
Do not assume that an old supply is adequate simply because it powered a Pi 4. Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply for Pi 5; whether an existing adapter is suitable depends on its output and the demands of the board and attached USB devices. Check its specifications against the official recommendation before relying on it. Official Pi 5 power-supply guidance and FAQ
What costs are easy to overlook?
Case compatibility
A Pi 4 case will not fit a Pi 5. Raspberry Pi’s product page states: “Raspberry Pi 5 won’t fit the Raspberry Pi 4 Case.” If you are reusing parts, budget for a compatible case only if you want or need one.

Launch-era prices are not current quotes
At Pi 5’s 2023 launch, Raspberry Pi listed a $10 case, $5 active cooler, and $12 27W USB-C power adapter. Those historical prices should not be used as today’s accessory prices. The launch announcement also described around 12W consumption in especially intensive workloads; that is not a universal average draw or a basis for a standard yearly electricity estimate. Tax, shipping, and the contents of a kit
When comparing a board or kit, note whether the quoted price includes tax and shipping and exactly which accessories are included. A board-only listing will not be comparable to a bundle that includes power and storage unless you account for those differences.

How to compare Raspberry Pi options fairly
Compare like with like rather than judging by the headline board price. For two boards, kits, or small computers, line up the following before deciding:
- RAM capacity
- Storage type and capacity, including any required M.2 adapter or HAT
- Power supply
- Case and cooling
- Display and input accessories
- Project-specific add-ons
- Local price, currency, tax, shipping, and quote date
A dated local quote for your chosen configuration is the only sound basis for a personal total. The parts you can reuse—and whether your project is headless, desktop, or storage-heavy—determine which lines belong in that total.
