President Donald Trump said on July 16, 2025, that Coca-Cola had agreed to use “REAL Cane Sugar” in U.S. Coke. The company’s initial response did not confirm a wholesale recipe change. A week later, Coca-Cola announced a U.S. cane-sugar offering designed to complement—not replace—its core portfolio.
Did Coca-Cola agree to switch U.S. Coke to cane sugar?
Trump wrote on July 16, 2025, that Coca-Cola had agreed to use real cane sugar in Coke sold in the United States. In its immediate response, Coca-Cola did not confirm that all U.S. Coke would change formula. The Associated Press reported the claim and the company’s response: AP.
Coca-Cola said: “We appreciate President Trump’s enthusiasm for our iconic Coca-Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca-Cola product range will be shared soon.” That statement referred to forthcoming offerings, not a confirmed replacement of the core U.S. recipe. The company’s July 16 statement is available here.
What did Coca-Cola announce later?
In its July 22, 2025 earnings release, Coca-Cola said it planned to introduce an offering made with U.S. cane sugar “this fall in the United States.” It described the product as an expansion of the Trademark Coca-Cola range that would complement its core portfolio. The release is on Coca-Cola’s investor site.

Then-CEO James Quincey also framed the approach as an addition rather than a substitution. As The Guardian reported from the investor call, Quincey called it an “and” strategy, not an “or” strategy, and said Coca-Cola would “continue to use a lot of the corn syrup that we do now.” The Guardian’s report covers those remarks.
Coca-Cola’s 2026 proxy statement subsequently listed “Coca-Cola with U.S. cane sugar” among innovations introduced in 2025. That supports describing it as a 2025 product innovation, but the filing does not establish today’s package sizes, prices, or store availability. The proxy is available here.
What did the Corn Refiners Association say?
The Corn Refiners Association opposed replacing high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) with cane sugar. On July 16, 2025, its president and CEO, John Bode, said: “Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar doesn’t make sense.” He argued that a switch would cost thousands of U.S. food manufacturing jobs, depress farm income, and increase imports of foreign sugar, while offering no nutritional benefit.
Those employment, farm-income, import, and nutrition points are the association’s advocacy claims, not independently established effects in the cited statement. The association’s response is here.

How is Mexican Coke different?
The cane-sugar plan is not the same as Mexican Coke already sold in the United States. The Associated Press reported in July 2025 that Coca-Cola had imported Mexican Coke in glass bottles for U.S. consumers since 2005. That existing imported product is useful context, but it does not show that the separate planned U.S.-made offering had replaced the core U.S. formula.
