Gaming PC Electricity Costs: Compare a Flat-Rate Plan With a Standard Tariff

Calculate a gaming PC’s energy use from measured kWh or average watts and hours, then apply the right flat-rate or time-of-use price. Keep standing charges separate.

To compare what gaming costs on different electricity plans, measure or estimate your PC’s energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh), then apply the unit rate that matches when you use it. A flat-rate plan uses one price per kWh at all times; a time-of-use plan charges different rates in different periods. Your bill and tariff are specific to your location, meter and payment terms, so use your own rates where possible.

What determines a gaming PC’s electricity cost?

Your gaming PC’s cost depends on the energy it uses, how long it runs and the applicable price per kWh. A power supply’s wattage rating is not a reading of the PC’s actual consumption: it describes the supply’s capacity, not the energy the computer draws during a gaming session.

The basic calculation is:

Energy (kWh) = average power (W) ÷ 1,000 × hours used

Usage cost = energy (kWh) × electricity unit rate

For example, suppose the PC averages 400 W while gaming for three hours a day over 30 days, and the applicable rate is 30 pence per kWh. The energy estimate is 0.4 kW × 3 hours × 30 days = 36 kWh. At 30 pence per kWh, that is 1,080 pence, or £10.80 in usage charges. These are illustrative assumptions, not a typical gaming-PC result or a quoted tariff.

How to measure or estimate your setup

Measure cumulative energy use

A plug-in electricity usage meter can record cumulative kWh for the equipment connected through it. A compatible energy-monitoring smart plug may also provide energy readings. Check that the device is compatible with your local plug and electrical ratings. If the meter measures only the PC, it does not include the monitor or other peripherals; connect those separately or use a meter arrangement that measures the whole setup. The Australian Government’s appliance guidance discusses monitoring appliance energy use.

If a meter records total kWh over a representative period, use that reading directly: multiply the recorded kWh by the rate or rates that applied during that period. This avoids estimating average watts and session length.

Estimate from average power and hours

If you do not have a meter, use a measured or otherwise supportable average power figure for the PC while gaming, then multiply by actual gaming hours. Include idle or standby time only if you are estimating the PC’s total electricity use rather than gaming alone. There is no established universal wattage or cost for a gaming PC, so avoid treating one scenario as a typical bill.

Flat-rate versus time-of-use pricing

On a single-rate or flat-rate plan, each kWh is charged at the same unit price regardless of when it is used. A time-of-use or multi-rate plan has different unit prices for defined periods. Apply each time-band rate only to the energy used in that period. The Australian Government’s tariff guidance describes these pricing-plan distinctions.

To compare plans fairly, keep the same gaming schedule and kWh assumptions on both. For a multi-rate plan, separate the energy used in each period and calculate each portion at its own rate:

Total usage cost = (peak kWh × peak rate) + (off-peak kWh × off-peak rate) + any other time-band charges

A low off-peak price does not by itself make a plan cheaper. The relevant comparison depends on how much of your gaming actually falls in each period and on the rates for the other periods.

Fixed and variable describe price stability, not time bands

“Fixed” and “variable” describe whether prices are held steady or can change under the tariff terms. They do not, on their own, tell you whether a plan has one rate or multiple time-of-use rates. Check the plan’s actual unit rates and time bands rather than inferring them from its fixed or variable label.

Include standing charges only when comparing whole bills

A standing charge is a daily amount for the electricity supply, separate from charges for kWh used. It is payable even when no electricity is consumed. When comparing whole household bills for the same period, add the standing charge for each plan separately from the PC’s usage cost. Do not count an existing household standing charge as a new cost caused by gaming.

For a gaming-only estimate, report the additional usage cost rather than allocating the whole household standing charge to the PC. Ofgem explains standing charges and how energy use affects bills in its price-cap and standing-charge guidance.

Use your own tariff details

For a personal comparison, check your bill or tariff documents for the unit rate, any time bands and the standing charge. Rates can vary by location, payment method and meter type, and the total bill also depends on consumption. A published average is a reference point, not a guaranteed rate for your home.

As a geographically and temporally limited UK reference, Ofgem’s published average for Direct Debit electricity in England, Scotland and Wales from 1 October to 31 December 2026 is 26.32 pence per kWh, with a 54.83 pence per day standing charge. These are averages for the specified period and payment method, not a quote for an individual home or an estimate of PC consumption. Ofgem provides unit rates and standing charges for the applicable price-cap period.

In Great Britain, Ofgem’s price cap applies to unit rates and standing charges on standard variable and default tariffs; a customer who agreed a fixed tariff is not protected by that cap. The cap does not set a customer’s total bill: as Ofgem puts it, “The more energy you use, the higher your bill will be.” See Ofgem’s explanation of the cap and standing charges for the scope and details.

A practical comparison checklist

  • Record the PC’s cumulative kWh over a representative gaming period, or calculate energy from average watts and hours.
  • Decide whether the estimate covers only the PC or the monitor and peripherals as well.
  • Use the unit rate on your bill; for a time-of-use plan, split kWh across the plan’s actual time bands.
  • Hold the gaming schedule and energy use constant when comparing plans.
  • Keep standing charges separate from PC usage costs, adding them only for a whole-bill comparison.
  • Check that the rates correspond to your location, meter and payment terms.
