Re:

Does Undervolting a GPU Reduce Electricity Use and Heat?

Undervolting can reduce GPU power use and heat when performance stays similar, but results depend on workload, boost behavior, and cooling. Compare power, temperature, and performance under the same conditions.

Yes—undervolting can reduce a GPU’s power draw and the heat it produces, but the result is not guaranteed. It depends on the graphics card, workload, cooling, and whether the GPU uses the extra headroom to boost to higher clock speeds. To know whether it saves energy in your case, compare power and performance under the same workload before and after.

What undervolting changes

A GPU needs electrical power to run. Reducing its operating voltage can lower power use when it performs roughly the same work at similar clock speeds. Less board power generally means less heat for the cooler to dissipate, all else equal.

But GPU performance and power management are dynamic. NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation explains that power management can adjust the GPU’s performance state to stay within a power envelope, and that power capping can reduce clocks when the GPU draws too much power. If an undervolt gives the GPU more headroom, it may use some of it to boost higher. In that case, power may fall less than expected—or remain similar while performance improves.

Undervolting is also different from lowering a power limit. A power limit sets a ceiling on power draw; undervolting changes the voltage used at a given operating point. Either may affect performance and power, but they are not the same adjustment.

Does undervolting save electricity?

It can, if average power falls while the GPU completes the same workload at comparable performance. A brief peak reading is less useful for estimating energy use than average power over the time you actually use the GPU: sustained watts multiplied by hours gives watt-hours.

Whether that changes your bill depends on how many hours the GPU runs, how much its average power falls, and your electricity rate. There is no universal savings percentage for consumer GPUs, and the evidence here does not establish typical household savings or whole-system electricity reductions.

Does undervolting lower GPU temperature?

Often, lower board power means less heat for the cooling system to remove under otherwise similar conditions. However, the observed temperature also depends on the cooler, fan behavior, case airflow, room temperature, workload, and how long the GPU runs. A GPU that boosts higher after undervolting may not show as large a temperature drop as expected.

NVIDIA’s thermal-management guidance for IGX describes lowering clocks and rail voltages to reduce power and help control temperature. That guidance is specific to the IGX platform, not a consumer undervolting procedure. It illustrates why temperature, voltage, and clock behavior can interact, rather than establishing a temperature reduction for gaming cards.

What one published study found—and what it does not show

Price, Barsdell, Greenhill, Clark, and Babich reported that GPU power consumption varies nonlinearly with both temperature and supply voltage. In a 2014 experiment, they found that lowering voltage and increasing clock frequency while keeping die temperature low improved power efficiency by up to 37–48% over default settings on an NVIDIA K20 running xGPU, a compute-bound radio astronomy workload.

That figure means higher performance per watt in that particular experiment. It is not a 37–48% reduction in electricity use or a prediction of what a modern gaming GPU will save. The study used specific hardware, software, and tuned operating conditions; it does not establish a safe voltage or a universal result for other cards.

How to check your own GPU’s result

Compare stock settings and your undervolt using the same repeatable game, benchmark, or compute workload. Keep other settings and conditions as consistent as you can. Record power, temperature, performance, and stability so a lower number in one category does not hide a trade-off in another.

  1. Choose a repeatable workload. Use the same game scene, benchmark run, or compute task for each comparison. Note the GPU model, driver and tuning software versions, and relevant settings.
  2. Record a stock baseline. Capture average board power in watts where available, GPU temperature, clock speed, and a performance measure such as frame rate or benchmark score. Record hotspot or memory temperature too if your card exposes those readings.
  3. Apply your undervolt and repeat. Run the same workload long enough to observe sustained behavior, not just a momentary peak. Check that the workload finishes without crashes, visual artifacts, or calculation errors.
  4. Compare like with like. Look at power and temperature alongside performance. A lower power reading is not a like-for-like efficiency gain if the GPU also delivers substantially less performance.

NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation describes board-power and temperature readings, but availability varies by device. Telemetry labels and readings can differ across cards and software, so use readings your hardware actually supports. These checks are practical ways to assess stability, not a guarantee that a particular voltage is safe.

When the result is useful to your budget

If your measurements show lower average power at comparable performance, you can estimate the energy difference for your usage period: average watts saved × hours of use ÷ 1,000 = kilowatt-hours saved. Multiply that by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour to estimate the bill impact. Use your own measured power difference and usage hours; a published efficiency result from another GPU and workload is not a substitute.
