A retailer’s closure does not automatically mean its gift cards are void or that returns are still available. Check the retailer’s current official notices and customer-service channel, then verify any bankruptcy or court deadlines. Treat gift-card redemption, returning an item you received, and recovering money for an undelivered order as separate questions: each may have a different answer and remedy.
First, identify what you need resolved
Write down the retailer’s name, the store or website involved, the purchase date, and any order or gift-card details. Then identify which situation applies:

- Unused gift card: You want to spend its remaining balance.
- Item already delivered: You want to return or exchange it under the retailer’s policy.
- Order not delivered: You want the goods or your money back.
- Return already accepted: You are waiting for a refund that has not arrived.
Also record how you paid. A credit-card dispute, a debit-card dispute, and a request to redeem a retailer’s gift card are not interchangeable routes.
Check the retailer’s current official notices
Start with the retailer’s own website, verified customer-service number, email notices, and signs at the store. Search its closure or bankruptcy notices for “gift cards,” “returns,” “refunds,” “exchanges,” “claims,” and any final date. If a bankruptcy claims administrator is named, use the contact details in an official retailer or court notice rather than relying on an old article or an unverified search result.

For a gift card, ask whether existing cards are being redeemed now, whether online redemption is available, how to check the balance, whether a buyer or competitor accepts the card, and whether there is a last-use date. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers that a company in bankruptcy may honor gift cards, or a competitor may accept them. The FTC and Michigan Attorney General also advise checking with the company or a competitor and checking back: acceptance may change. Those sources do not guarantee that any particular card will be accepted.
For a return, locate the policy that applied to the purchase and ask whether the retailer is still accepting returns for purchases made on your date. Confirm the final return date, where the item must go, required proof and condition, and how any refund will be handled. Ask for the answer in writing if possible. A retailer’s closure alone does not establish a general right to return an otherwise eligible delivered item.

Keep proof and track every deadline
Save the gift card and its terms, the card number or identifier, balance information, receipts, order confirmations, tracking details, return authorizations, policy text, closure announcements, and all messages with the retailer. Take dated screenshots or save PDFs of webpages that might change. Keep a log of calls, including dates, names, what was promised, and any complaint numbers. The FTC recommends collecting transaction records and keeping notes of efforts to resolve a problem.
There may be separate clocks for the retailer’s return window, a bankruptcy court’s cutoff, and a payment-card dispute. Do not assume that meeting one deadline satisfies another. Follow the most current notice for the specific retailer and case.

Understand how bankruptcy and state law can affect gift cards
There is no safe nationwide assumption that all gift cards survive a retailer’s bankruptcy or that all become worthless. The FTC’s general guidance says a company may honor cards and a competitor may accept them, but the outcome depends on the retailer and any case-specific orders. State law and the type of card can also matter.
For example, the Connecticut Attorney General says a buyer is not necessarily entitled to a refund or other compensation for an unspent card when the issuer closes, and its guidance says there is no state or federal consumer guaranty fund for consumers in that situation. California’s Attorney General describes California Civil Code section 1749.6 as requiring covered businesses to honor gift certificates even in bankruptcy. Those are state-specific statements, not rules to apply automatically elsewhere. Card type matters too: Connecticut’s guidance distinguishes merchant gift cards from cards issued or backed by a federal financial institution.

If the retailer is in bankruptcy, read the case’s official notice for gift-card terms, return procedures, claim instructions, and dates. A historical example shows why: in Rite Aid’s 2025 bankruptcy case, a court order set June 5, 2025, as the final date for gift-card use and returns or exchanges. That date has passed and applies only to that case; it is not a current deadline for other retailers.

If goods were not accepted or delivered as agreed and you paid by credit card, contact the seller promptly and then contact the card issuer if the problem is unresolved. FTC guidance says a qualifying billing-error notice generally must be sent in writing within 60 days after the first statement showing the error. The 60-day period is tied to that statement, not simply to the date you learned the retailer closed. The FTC also says a dispute about product quality is not itself a billing error, so an ordinary complaint or return request may not qualify.
Best Value
- Redeemable only for merchandise and in-store services at U.S. Macy’s, Macy’s Backstage, and macys.com (U.S. shipments only)
- May not be redeemed for cash (except as required by law) or applied as payment or credit to any credit card account
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
In a merchant bankruptcy, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Regulation Z commentary says a consumer may assert a qualifying claim or defense directly against the credit-card issuer without first filing a claim in the merchant’s bankruptcy case. This is not a blanket refund guarantee: the credit-card rule has conditions and limits, and whether it applies depends on the facts.
Debit-card protections differ. Contact your bank or debit-card issuer immediately and ask about its dispute process. North Carolina’s Department of Justice likewise advises consumers whose business closes after a credit-card payment to contact the card company promptly about a possible chargeback.
For most covered mail, phone, or online orders, the FTC says a seller must ship within the promised time or, if it gave no shipping time, generally within 30 days. If the seller cannot meet that time, it must notify the buyer and offer the choice to agree to the delay or cancel for a full refund. This shipment rule concerns non-delivery; it does not establish return rights for goods that were delivered.
Escalate through the right channel
- Retailer still operating: Ask for a manager and use the company’s formal complaint channel.
- Retailer in bankruptcy: Follow the case’s official claims or customer instructions and note the applicable deadlines. If a notice names an administrator, confirm the contact details against an official notice.
- State-specific consumer question: Contact your state attorney general or consumer-protection office. The Pennsylvania Attorney General directed Rite Aid customers with problems concerning that case’s deadlines to the Bureau of Consumer Protection.
- Possible card billing dispute: Contact the issuer promptly, follow its instructions, and keep proof of any written notice.
When asking for help, state clearly whether you seek gift-card redemption, a return, a refund for an undelivered order, or resolution of a charge. Include the date, amount, payment method, and supporting records so the company, administrator, agency, or issuer can assess the right issue.
