You can, however, check the company behind the store, look for formal insolvency notices and financial warning signs, and limit how much money you put at risk before delivery. Treat each finding as evidence—not a guarantee—and check consumer rules where you live.
Start by identifying the company taking your money
A store’s brand name may differ from the legal entity that accepts your order. Ask for the company’s legal name and address, then compare them with the invoice, website terms and payment recipient. If the details do not match, ask the retailer to explain the relationship before paying.
Search the official companies register for the retailer’s jurisdiction and check the relevant insolvency or public-notice register for administration, liquidation or similar proceedings. New Zealand Consumer Protection recommends checking both types of record; it cautions that its Companies Register can take up to 10 days to update, so an apparently current entry may lag. Register names, coverage and update timing vary by country. New Zealand Consumer Protection’s company-check guidance explains its local process.
Read financial warning signs as signals, not a verdict
If the retailer publishes accounts or has a usable credit profile, compare recent information with earlier periods. Look for whether it has enough cash and operating cash flow to meet obligations, debt coming due, repeated losses, refinancing needs and any auditor statement about whether it can continue as a going concern. Where available, also note credit-rating downgrades and supplier-payment information.

The UK Government Commercial Function lists falling credit ratings, late creditor payments, repeated refinancing, reduced trade-credit insurance, asset sales and qualified going-concern opinions as possible signs of financial distress. Its guidance is for oversight of government suppliers, not a consumer prediction tool. One warning sign alone does not establish that a retailer is insolvent or about to fail. Read the UK government’s financial-risk guidance.
Many furniture retailers are privately held and disclose little or no financial information. If reliable accounts or ratings are unavailable, do not treat that absence as proof of distress—or as reassurance. Put more weight on formal records, consistent seller identity, written order terms and recent, specific trading evidence.
Check recent trading behavior and seller identity
Search the retailer’s name with terms such as “complaint,” “refund,” “delivery delay” and “administration.” Look across multiple recent sources. Repeated, dated accounts describing similar problems are more useful than a single anonymous allegation, but complaints still do not prove insolvency.
Confirm that contact details and the business identity are consistent across the website, invoice and payment recipient. For a marketplace purchase, check whether the stated buyer protection actually covers this seller and this furniture order. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that ratings may be fake or misleading and recommends checking seller contact information and terms. An HTTPS lock on a website indicates an encrypted connection; it does not prove that the seller is legitimate. See the FTC’s guidance on avoiding scams.

Compare retailers on the same evidence
A review score or reassuring badge should not outweigh formal records or clear order terms. Compare the same factors for each retailer:
| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Formal status | Whether the legal entity on the order matches the company-register entry, and whether an official insolvency or public-notice record shows proceedings. |
| Financial information | Whether recent accounts are available and what they show about cash flow, debt, losses and auditor language; note any published rating or supplier-payment evidence. |
| Money at risk | Deposit amount, time between deposit and delivery, balance schedule and whether your payment method offers relevant recourse. |
| Order protections | Written delivery estimate, cancellation and refund terms, warranty, damage process and total charges. |
| Operational credibility | Reachable contact details, consistent company identity across documents and payment, and patterns in recent, specific complaints. |
Official filings and notices are strongest for formal status. Documented customer reports can add context about trading, but they cannot independently establish that a company is failing.

Get the order terms in writing before paying
An advance payment leaves you exposed if the retailer cannot deliver. A UK government response summarizing the Law Commission’s work put the issue this way: “When making prepayments, consumers are effectively lending the business money, but without being in a position to assess the credit risk, unlike other lenders.” Read the UK government response on consumer prepayments and retailer insolvency.
Before placing the order, ask for a written confirmation that records:
Best Value
- The furniture description, total price and any additional fees.
- The deposit, remaining balance and when each payment is due.
- The estimated delivery date or date range, and what happens if it changes.
- Cancellation and refund terms, warranty coverage and the process for reporting damage.
Save the order, terms, receipt, payment record and all messages. North Carolina’s Department of Justice recommends getting the delivery date, total cost, warranty and store policies in writing. On delivery, inspect the furniture before signing. If it is damaged, the department advises refusing delivery and reporting the problem in writing with the order documents and photographs. - Ask whether the retailer will accept a smaller deposit.
- Avoid paying the entire balance far in advance when you can pay closer to delivery.
- Consider a credit card where available and appropriate, but check your card issuer’s dispute deadline and local rules before relying on it.
- Keep records of every payment and promise, including changes to the delivery date.
New Zealand Consumer Protection recommends a small deposit and paying by credit card for products on order; North Carolina DOJ says credit-card payment can improve the odds of a refund if a furniture retailer goes out of business. These are risk-reduction steps, not guarantees. Recovery rights and deadlines depend on location, payment type and circumstances. See New Zealand’s guidance on products that are on order.
Check local delivery and cancellation protections
Furniture delivery and refund rules are not universal. New York City’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection describes local requirements around written delivery dates, delay notices and remedies for undelivered furniture. North Carolina DOJ discusses cancellation rights for some non-local orders made by mail, phone or online. Those examples apply in their stated jurisdictions; consult your local consumer-protection authority before relying on a particular right.
